Incentives to Keep Teachers

But other employees get overtime pay. MCPS openly admits teachers work more than 40 hour weeks.

Cap classes at 20 students. That would make the job more effective and enjoyable

Great idea, but who will foot the bill for this?

While you are at it, you may want to look into the retention of speech pathologists and school psychs. Many empty positions due to high caseloads, high amounts of paperwork and having to cover empty positions.

Moco police have a $20k hiring bonus.

Police can make double their salary in overtime. No overtime for teachers.

Smaller classes. Nice idea, buts who’s funding the extra teachers, staff, and buildings.

Ability to fast track a behavioral IEP Talk to the state, federal government, oh and also the need for extra staff to complete IEP process quicker.

Ability to track students academically No. But I would grant the ability to move kids up or down throughout the year and for after school tutoring.

Salary match from other teaching positions when moving to MCPS Rather allow years to transfer

Increase PTO agree with rules for how it can be used

More planning time doesn’t matter without more staff

Ability to send students to front office for discipline—no ability to return to the classroom that day. WHere do you think they are to go

Federal Tax credit that increases for each yr worked Talk to the Federal Govt

Housing allowance that increases with length of service. Ability to convert allowance into something else (health care costs, 403b contribution) if not needed.

Develop sub program by school—subs can cover classes, front office, help in another classroom). This would be a floater role. Agree

Increase pay and benefits for paras Agree

Limit number of sp ed cases per teacher or instruction specialist
Agree but this is also limited by people and funding .

At the end of the day, I signed up to teach. I don’t need additional perks. I just want to teach. I don’t need housing. I just want to teach.

How can I do that? I hate to say it BUT we need to go back to how it was. Take away the electronics. Laptops and cellphones included. Give these kids pencil and paper. Go back to having class segregated with on grade level, below and above. If your child has an IEP or 504 for whatever the damn reason is, they need to go to a specialized school.

Finally some sanity in this conversation. This is the bottom line, right here ^.

I’d say:
No income tax for any teacher after x#of years
No property tax for teachers who choose to live in MC after 5 years within county and x#years of teaching

What else?

These are really bad ideas. The teacher can marry somebody wealthy and with high income, and that person would be able to benefit way too much. Plus, the council cannot pass laws for these taxes

I agree with this to a point. I do think that classes needed to go back to being separated by levels for reading and math. I also think that SOME students with 504 or IEP's should not be mainstreamed. I think it should be determined by whether a child is available for learning and does not disrupt the learning of others. Only a small portion of kids with 504 and IEP's fit into this category, but they shouldn't be mainstreamed until they can be functioning members of the class. In fact, any child who is unable to participate in class without disruption should not abe allowed to interfere with anyone else's learning.

Tbh, I think if just these two things were figured out, teachers would be fine.

Most professionals get paid enough to make ends meet. My kids qualified for free meals the first few years I was a teacher. Ridiculous.

And now my one in college qualifies for a Pell grant. After all of these years of teaching, I wouldn't think I would fall into the category of "exceptional financial need" but I do.
