Incentives to Keep Teachers

What should the BOE and County Council do to keep teachers?

I’d say:
No income tax for any teacher after x#of years
No property tax for teachers who choose to live in MC after 5 years within county and x#years of teaching

What else?

Free ice cream at Rita's for life.

Smaller class sizes and more planning time goes a LONG way. All the money won’t make me stay with case loads this high. It’s at the point where the goal is just to safely get kids in and out of the room. Actual learning is low on the list

Bruster’s and I’m in. Also smaller class sizes and proper SPED ratios would be a good place to start.

Lots of county employees with tuff jobs. Why are teachers on a pedestal? Fix the problems in mcps and parents step up and parent your kids.

Moco police have a $20k hiring bonus.

We need to prioritize the hire of new staff as well as keeping the current staff from leaving.

In the private sector if no one applies for a position the typical response is to increase the listed pay 20%. We honestly need to have a similar approach for education especially in tougher to fill roles.

That said counties don’t want to increase pay since it also obligates increases to pensions. I think state tax reductions as well as county tax reductions deserve merit for consideration. The state is making a big deal about education but not providing funding for the new initiatives. Any money proposed should go to shoring up fundamental teaching or else all the new ideas/money are wasted.

Make a thread for them on a separate board, but as this is the MCPS board it seems to fit

Smaller classes
Ability to fast track a behavioral IEP
Ability to track students academically
Salary match from other teaching positions when moving to MCPS
Increase PTO
More planning time
Ability to send students to front office for discipline—no ability to return to the classroom that day
Federal Tax credit that increases for each yr worked
Housing allowance that increases with length of service. Ability to convert allowance into something else (health care costs, 403b contribution) if not needed
Develop sub program by school—subs can cover classes, front office, help in another classroom). This would be a floater role.
Increase pay and benefits for paras
Limit number of sp ed cases per teacher or instruction specialist
