You think they aren’t because you attended one of them. I didn’t attend either and see them as peer schools, albeit different types of schools.

We live in MD and my kid decided between the two schools- he was a 1/2 BK and a Monroe scholar at W&M. UMD was $20K all in per year and W&M was $60K per year. We would have paid for W&M- he decided to go to UMD and ended up happy and is graduating with honors and a job offer and plenty of money for grad school.

UMD offers more majors and other options

I wish we had W&M in Maryland.

No, it's just a fact. They're definitely not peer schools either, W&M's peers are schools like Wake, Tufts, etc. and Maryland's are schools like UIUC, Ohio State, Rutgers, etc.

Two schools being publics in the DC area isn't enough to make them peers.

Well, W&M much better fits the description of a smaller college. The price difference must be significant, though. Cost being equal, I would definitely prefer W&M, but that is me. You need to factor cost.

Oops no, now you just look silly. I don’t live in either state so I don’t have a dog in this fight, but William and Mary is not in the same stratosphere as Tufts or Wake Forest.

Have to agree, the only thing W&M has in common with Wake or Tufts is undergrad population size.

Wake has more rigor, strong D1 sports and is actually more Greek, not that it is a good thing that last one.

Tufts I can see a few similarities in vibe of the students, but Tufts is stronger academically.

I think they’re comparable in many respects. Wake Forest and Tufts are the private college cousins of W&M, their public counter-part. WF and W&M are just a few schools apart in the national rankings. They were my top two choices back when I applied and there are still lots of crossover applications between WF and W&M.

They are reputational peers. I’m sorry you find that so upsetting.

You're right. UMD is ranked higher (46) than WM (53).
