Co-worker asking for my birthday

Exactly this. And it’s not unhinged.

Jehovah Witness?

My company we ask if on your birthday would you like is to order lunch from restaurant of you choice on birthday and we invite any peers you want to attend and we buy them lunch to. We don’t ask your birthday as we already know it.

We don’t publish it and optional. It is called being human. I don’t track who does it or not. I got a capital grill steak with cheesecake my birthday and invited 5-6 people who were nice to me during year

If someone asked when my birthday was I would just tell them the month and when they told me it was for the calendar I told them no thanks. I'm over 40 and don't want balloons at my desk (which they did there) or for them to get me a cake because I didn't attend their cake parties either. Now I'm remote and all they do on birthdays is say happy birthday on zoom and maybe send an email, which is fine.

Very clever. By asking where they want to go for lunch you make it clear they can't take the day off. I hope at least on that day you don't make them badge out for lunch, let them have an extra 15 minutes and maybe even allow a personal phone call at their desk.

What's so horrible about being treated nicely on your birthday?

Make up a date.

Me again. Leap year birthday.

They just want an excuse for cake. I think you can just say, “Thanks so much! But I’d prefer not to have my birthday on the calendar.” Then immediately pivot to talking about something else.

I'm not sure this is the hill to die on. I'd rather not have people wishing me a Happy Birthday at work, either, but somehow HR has everyone's birthdays, so just about every day there is a Teams message saying Happy Birthday to someone, and then 50 replies of people saying the same. Oh well. I just write in a quick Thank you all for the birthday wishes and it's done. Slightly annoying, but not the end of the world.

I am the collector of birthdays and help organize all the e-birthday cards. I've had to ask several people for their bdays. Idk what I'd think if someone just said "no thank you". I guess one less card to organize? Its not a big deal either way, the company just puts a big push on recognition/appreciation but if you dont want it, you dont want it.

Seems like a popularity contest. What if someone never gets asked to join the birthday lunches?

We invite your immediate coworkers. Then other people If you request. And yes if you are off your birthday can be another day and yes no one gets charged for the time.

My old company gave you off on your birthday,

Might shock you my boss gave me a holiday card and we brought in bagels and breakfast whole company a few times. We even OMG gave the guy with COPD and women on crutches a parking spot near front door. We are monsters!

I use my older brother's birthday for this and everything else requiring one.

Harry Potter knows his birthday, don't be silly.
