Co-worker asking for my birthday

Anonymous
A coworker wants to know my birthday so they can post it on our team calendar. They’re very nice and they mean well, but I’m just not interested in having my birth date information posted so publicly. How do I turn down the request in a nice way?

“ Thank you for the offer and for thinking of me, but I do not celebrate my birthday and so I do not want to be on the event calendar.”

Easy.

Ugh this is so annoying. I had a coworker who did this. It's hard to refuse to give it because they will make you seem crazy for not wanting to share PEI

I think if you refuse you will come off as unhinged, sorry. What happened on your birthday to make it si negative? What will happen if people wish you a happy birthday?

No but you do sound crazy.

Just say I don't celebrate my birthday so I prefer not to share it.

They do this because they expect the whole office to celebrate THEIR birthday.

It’s not unhinged to not want to share your birthday with an entire company. Maybe they are shy, introverted, maybe it’s a religious issue, maybe they’re security conscious. Who knows but it’s not unhinged. MaybeOp doesn’t mind sharing it with just one person but doesn’t want it on blast to everybody.

Sorry but this is such an overreaction. It is unhinged. Most people hide their age but not the date. What do they have dancing girls?

Just share the birthday and say thanks when people wish you a happy day!

Op here. I don’t have any negative associations with my birthday and I don’t mind sharing it in a personal context. But I’m not someone who enjoys being the center of attention, even if that just means having my birthday posted on a calendar. And there are some other issues with this particular person that I don’t want to discuss here.

You are making it a bigger deal than it has to be. You could always be "sick" on the actual birthday.

Nope, they don't sound "crazy" at all.

OP been there, done that. There's always a few of these types around the office. Wish I had that kind of time in my day. Usually just takes a few polite but firm refusals before they finally give up and move on.

Agree to disagree.

I don’t mind if anybody knows my birthday or my age and I appreciate a HBD. But I know a couple of people who don’t like sharing that information so to me, it’s not unhinged.

Yes, I've worked in so many offices that do this.

If you refuse you will likely be seen as not a team player - though sharing that info has no correlation with how you get along with your team.

If you don't want to share for security reasons, just give her a different date (that you will remember - so maybe the first day of the actual month of your birthday).

If you don't want to share because you don't want it celebrated - you can tell her a day that's a Saturday - although next year you might have to take that day off if its not a weekend again.
