Mathcounts Chapter scores

38 would have made top 10 the last few years, and in some cases was enough to advance to state from Bull Run.

Virginia has a total of 76 schools registered. across all chapters, including individual homeschoolers.

By comparison, a typical middle school All District Band audition has 45 schools participating in each of Virginia's 16 band districts, each school sending more kids there than to MC. Mathcounts kids do both, of course.
But really, only 76 schools in a state where this is practically the only school-sponsored organized math competition is extremely poor and sad. Maybe support for math should become part of VA's school funding formula. If a school doesn't do it, cut their per-student funding.

To be fair, Band is a curricular subject in a useful artistic skill, and Mathcounts is an extracurricular with goofy puzzles, beyond curricular math.
And Band is a group activity so getting to play with a full band of good performers is a great aspiration for the serious band students.
So you'd expect a lot more people going to District Band.

The interest dropped off with covid. Bull Run chapter had 22 teams in 2020. 2021 chapter contest was online. 2022 chapter contest was online.

Three chapter contests in the same location?

Tj testing was that day. Did these kids have to pick one or did they start later in the day with the MathCounts contest?

The kids went to the TJ test in the morning and then went to the MathCounts chapter in the afternoon. It was a very long day for them.

It was a strenuous day for the 8th graders in my child's Mathcounts team. The children should be proud of themselves!

It seems unfair that the Fairfax and NOVA chapters are (almost) always the top in state.

Also, getting third in Chapter (e.g. Basis this year, Cooper other years) really hurts chances for some bright kids who might have made state otherwise.
