By comparison, a typical middle school All District Band audition has 45 schools participating in each of Virginia's 16 band districts, each school sending more kids there than to MC. Mathcounts kids do both, of course.
But really, only 76 schools in a state where this is practically the only school-sponsored organized math competition is extremely poor and sad. Maybe support for math should become part of VA's school funding formula. If a school doesn't do it, cut their per-student funding.[/quote]

To be fair, Band is a curricular subject in a useful artistic skill, and Mathcounts is an extracurricular with goofy puzzles, beyond curricular math. 
And Band is a group activity so getting to play with a full band of good performers is a great aspiration for the serious band students. 
So you'd expect a lot more people going to  District Band. [/quote]
