What Does FCPS Do with Excess Capacity at Herndon HS

Anonymous
They need to shift the western boundaries so that more Franklin Farm kids go to Herndon/South Lakes instead of Oakton.

Then shift some of the Chantilly kids to Oakton.

Shift some Westfield kids to Centreville.

Leave everyone else alone. We need to fix the western Fairfax issues.

No one at Chantilly thinks getting moved to Oakton, which is much further away, “fixes” anything.

Centreville is over capacity and can't take more kids. Kids needs to be moved out of Centreville boundaries.

DP. Centreville is getting expanded to 3000 seats. It will have plenty of room for kids from Chantilly or, if Chantilly kids are moved to Westfield, from Westfield.

If Centreville was only being expanded to 2500, there might be money for other schools, but FCPS prefers to spend big on a handful of schools rather than spread the money around.

No one wants to go to Herndon and no one cares to fill Herndon up to capacity as a result.

They aren’t going to expand a school to over 2700 seats and leave it with under 2000 kids. Buckle in.

Is FCPS finally reducing their costs with so many fewer kids? Maybe they can let a private school open up at Herndon High or any of these other schools so far below capacity

I mean are our taxes going down?

FCPS is about 8000 kids down from its peak enrollment, but the enrollment is still higher than at many other times in the past when FCPS had the same number of high/secondary schools (25).

They did close two high schools in the 80s (Jefferson, Fort Hunt), but in retrospect those weren’t necessarily great decisions. And they flirted with closing Marshall in the early 90s when the enrollment was around 1200, but that would have been a disaster given later growth in and near Tysons.

It’s sketchy that FCPS waits until this huge expansion of Herndon has been completed, and only then come out with updated projections that show a big decline in enrollment.

I’m sure the building contractors didn’t mind, just like the contractors at the 600-student elementary school in Herndon now scheduled to get expanded to 1000 seats despite no projected increase in enrollment (Dranesville ES).

McLean will become a bigger mess with Tysons growth and the casino that will be going there. Just wait.

Forestville will NEVER get redistributed back to Herndon.

Like ever.

It seems the most likely to move to Herndon

Given that Forestville once went to Herndon, I wouldn’t be so sure, but the Taylor Swift reference is cute.
