Teacher didn't change a 59 TO D

I can remember my teachers saying that they didn’t GIVE us good grades or bad grades, we got the grades we earned.

Quarter grade, but got E the 1st quarter so his grade are E E.
LD student with ADHD taking Spanish 1A.

Is he in middle school or high school?

He ended up with E for the semester for Spanish 1A. I just wish he would've emailed me or give my son extra credit so he could've passed the semester. He did but doing the 1st marking period, but improved a lot doing the second marking period.

As an adult Spanish learner, one of the things I’ve found really helpful are these animated preschool songs in Spanish. They cover a lot of basic vocabulary, offer some exposure to grammar, and are catchy enough to stick.

While Duolingo is extremely weak on grammar and deleting the discussion boards made it useless for independent study, since he his teacher can answer questions as they arise, he might still find it useful. I liked that I could listen to a word or phrase repeatedly, even slow it down sometimes, and then play it while I tried to say it at the same time, so that I could hear the difference. Duolingo is free and available as a website or app.

While he won’t get credit for the work he does at home, maybe these could help him catch up to his class.

This is not a teacher or LD problem. Your kid clearly put absolutely no effort into this class. I get LD but his is not the problem. My dyslexic ADHD kid struggles immensely with languages yet he’s able to pass because he tries and does the work despite not understanding a majority of the content.

You don’t get an E if you show up and complete the work. Even if you don’t understand any of it. Your kid didn’t do the work and earned the Es.

OP, you want a teacher to fudge the numbers so your kid doesn't fail? And you wonder how he ended up this way? This is 100% a parenting failure.

I think you would find more compassion on the special needs page. In general, I do agree kids should get the grade they earned. But I also understand that certain disabilities do make passing classes a challenge. The question is what did the student do to get help? Did they do all assignments and prepare for quizzes and tests? Were they respectful in class?

My DS got a D in a math class. He wasn’t lazy. He went in for extra help and saw a tutor 2x a week. And I had begged the school to add math to his IEP. He was grateful to pass at all, but he was crushed that he barely eked by. He is hoping to take it again in summer school but I don’t know how it will have a different outcome because I don’t know what we can do differently but it’s worth a shot. Check with the school to see if that’s an option.

By the way DS cannot take a language due to his disability so he is taking ASL. For the future, see if that is an option.

My ADHD/low processing/learning disabled son managed to graduate MCPS with a wgpa of 4.6, OP. He had an IEP, resource class, extended time, typing accommodations, etc. We tried many different ADHD meds over the years, at many different doses. We taught him study skills, and paid for tutors. He took two languages to AP level.

A 59.5 is officially a D. Anything lower is an E. You need to get a tutor for your son, possibly tweak his ADHD meds, and teach him study skills. The class has standards that he is not meeting, and that's not the teacher's fault. Many SN kids don't do well with live languages, so if you think he's not going to progress well, see if his school has ASL, or Latin. Since there's no speaking requirement, sometimes those can be easier.

I don't understand. Your son had a 59%. The lowest he could've gotten in MP1 is 50%. A 9% improvement is not "improving a lot."

Secondly, do you not have access to ParentVUE and at least check your son's grades once a week? How did you miss the Es?

How many students is she giving Ds to? Maybe she can't teach.

Extra credit is illegal in MCPS.

Was this 59% average, or was this half 70% and half 0% rounded up to 50%?

Passing a class is punishment, not reward. Why would you want your kid to move on to a higher level class they aren’t ready for? They’ll fail that too. Regroup, try again, with a better plan with supports and checkins.

What was your reaction to the first E?

Did your student reach 60%, OP? No? There you go.

But in this case, your complaint is particularly frivolous because you don't even have a rounding argument. A 59.10% rounds to a 59%, not a 60%. To be clear, I'd be fine if your kid had a 59.90% and still didn't get a D. But that's not the situation here.

It depends on sigfigs. 60% could be 1 sigfig so 55% rounds up. That’s basically how semester averages of 2 quarters works.

NP- I didn’t know that extra credit was illegal in the county. Is this new? My kids have never needed it, but I used to use it when I was a student.
