Now what for Thu/Fri…snow day?

Kids will be given Chromebooks tomorrow to take home. Isn’t this what would make the most sense

Yes, but that also means that's why it won't happen.

My bet is:
Thursday - 2 hour delay
Friday - closure

I vote for virtual school for the rest of the week! My kids loved virtual. It will be good times all around.

Having to make up missed days in June is worthless. Virtual days do not have to be complicated. Kids can check in with teachers, be given instructions for assignments, done. It's dumb that in 2024 MCPS cannot figure out how to work from home when needed.

I am a teacher with MCPS (elementary level). During the period of time when we were sending home Chromebooks regularly, every student had a case to protect the Chromebook, as well as a charger. We don’t have these things now. If we send Chromebooks home, they are going straight from the cart into backpacks, with no case and no charger (chargers are wired into the carts now at most schools). I have no idea what happened to the cases and chargers, but we don’t have extras at our school to send home with students.

When we were sending them home daily, we had parents who did not want the Chromebooks coming home…ever. We had parents put it in writing that they did not want Chromebooks to come home and if we did pivot to online learning, their children would not be participating.

With MCPS saying that all absences are considered “excused” for online learning, there will no doubt be many students not logging into Zoom. There will be no new learning on virtual days. No one wants virtual learning to happen. Students currently in grades K-2 have never experienced virtual learning and have little experience or practice using Chromebooks. The current 3rd grade students were virtual for kindergarten, but they don’t really use Chromebooks much either (outside of mandatory testing).

Teachers want to be in school this week. The end of the marking period is next Friday and we need time with our students…real time…not virtual time.

Tomorrow- 2hr delay plus 2hr early release- gotta get everyone off the road before evening snow starts.

Friday- closed.

Tomorrow will be early release and no school Friday.

They'll get a waiver for the extra days at the end of the year (at least this 3rd one).

You heard it here first.

I'd love to see their justification for a waiver considering everyone else in the immediate area is open (except Howard, since it didn't make sense to have a 2 hr delay on a scheduled half day).

Why would the state give a waiver when the state allows for 8 virtual inclement weather days? 3 can be asynchronous. Every county but MCPS is implementing a specific, state approved plan for inclement weather. MCPS will be denied waivers for not even attempting to follow the state's guidelines. Most school systems submitted plans in October. MCPS is dropping the ball, as usual.

A virtual day is not helpful, why does anybody want this?

Praise Allah - a normal poster!!
These are freaking KIDS. Let them have snow days. It’s not that deep, people.

Very true.

I did have a moment of irritation that MCPS had to change its mind this morning. Make the call the day before, stick to it. It could have been a 2 hr delay or a closure, but just don't spring stuff on people at the last minute.

BUT you and PP are right and we are going to enjoy the day!

Because they always get a waiver?

Before the state implemented inclement virtual weather days there were waivers. This is the second year the state has had their guidelines.
