People here VASTLY overestimate the effect local politics has on a college’s applicants. Have Texas and Rice suffered? Most DCUMers would donate a kidney to get into Rice. They’ve been conservative forever. When Michigan and Pennsylvania went for Trump, did that negatively impact apps to UMichigan or Penn or CMU or Swarthmore? People flood Duke and UNCCH and Davidson. Why do you think Florida is somehow the one place people would avoid going because of its politic?
Yes. FL is different from the other places mentioned because MI and NC and VA and even Alabama and TX let the Board of Governors do their job and the colleges may reflect the political leanings of the state, but for the most part college specific professors, departments, subjects, tenure, etc aren’t being targeted to score political points. DeSantis is making major changes based solely on politics and culture wars. Politics and culture wars and red vs blue is everywhere. It’s nice that most states can keep it it of state college administration by having Boards of Governors with rolling terms.
