That’s how it is with a lot of AP classes and exactly how it use to be in the beginning. Kids would take basic or honors levels of a class, determine they liked the subject area and wanted more depth and rigor and then take an AP. So intro bio and then AP Bio later in HS. Why student and parents now think they should be able to just jump into AP classes I don’t know. Take Hn Physics and then Physic C. |
My DC took AP Calc and AP Physics C at the same time. It would have been better to have taken Calc AB before AP Physics C. We hired a tutor to give him the Calc part upfront, so he managed but without that it would have been a sh$&$show. |
Yes. It's only in recent years that I've seen MCPS pushing kids directly into AP-level courses which is odd to me. |
Since all classes are now H level that is effectively grade level. The non grade level kids have to go to AP |
Stop. All classes are not honors level. |
Exactly. It’s a false statement. Kids should take the level they are prepared to take. Then teachers wouldn’t have kids in AP Physics I without a prayer of passing the class nor exam unless the teacher then goes through the process of teaching study skills and the math needed to survive plus giving up their planning and lunch periods to reteaching. Stop this game of having kids trying to one up each other by taking the most APs possible only to need expensive tutors and therapy to survive HS. |
That seems normal to me. Isn't honors chem a prereq for AP chem and honors bio a prereq for AP bio? |
WJ meeting said that some students could take AP physics in 9th. Only a few kids do it but that seemed absurd to me. |
Those are more analogous to AP Physics C, not AP Physics 1 which has no prereqs. |
That's because B-CC only offers AP Physics C, not AP Physics 1. If you want a class that does not have honors precalc as a required, go for the two-year IB Physics class. (It's a two-year sequence either way, given that you have to do honors physics for AP Physics C.) |
And people should get over the idea that somehow this class is "easy." Calculus was invented for physics and doing an algebra-based physics class is not always intuitive. The College Board wants an "accessible" version, since not all kids get to Calculus, but has struggled to decide what this class should be. |
BCC offers AP Physics C, not AP Physics 1. |
What’s the typical sequence of math and science classes at BCC then? |
What’s the typical sequence of math and science classes at BCC then for math loving kids. Next year my son will take geometry in ninth because the school district we are moving from had a slower role in math. He asked if he can take geometry and algebra two at the same time and they didn’t recommend it but said he can take summer school. |
For the math loving kids : Hns Alg 2/Hns Pre- Cal/Cal BC/Multi |
