| If you have terrible dust -- you dusted yesterday and it looks like you haven't dusted in ages -- then you might want to get your air ducts professionally cleaned. |
monthly I follow the FlyLady system. Weekly quick clean and each week of the month a deep clean in a zone. My kids do the weekly clean and it takes about an hour. I do the deep clean throughout the week and it takes about 20 minutes. 5000 sq feet, 5 bedroom house, 3 kids |

My apartment is filthy. I don't have a desk or bookcase, or tv-hutch/stand. All of which would help tremendously with clutter and organization. So I have piles of stuff on the coffee table, floor, ottoman, bed, etc. This isn't how I used to live or want to live now.
Floors: maybe once every three months? Bathrooms: maybe once every two months Really scrub shower/tubs: never Change bed sheets: two or three times a year Dust: never Inside of oven/microwave: i cleaned the inside of the microwave this year for the first time. it's beautiful Windows: never Mirrors: maybe once a year Stairways: n/a Empty out and scrub fridge: i throw out old food once a week, but never scrub it Garage floors: n/a Baseboards: never Fans/blinds/light fixtures: never |

Empty nester, both of us work from home. One dog. I've always cleaned my own house and things are easy-peasy now with the kids gone. I pick up every night before bed and do a deeper clean every Saturday morning.
Floors: Vacuum once per week for carpet, mop the kitchen floor as needed, no less than once per week. Bathrooms: Deep clean once per week, wipedown if things look icky between cleans. Really scrub shower/tubs: Once per week. Change bed sheets: Once per week. Dust: Once per week. Inside of oven/microwave: Once per week Windows: 3x (ish) a year Mirrors: Once per week Stairways: no stairs Empty out and scrub fridge: 2x per year for deep clean, a smaller "purge" every Thursday evening before Friday trash day. Garage floors: no garage Baseboards: when I notice they need it Fans/blinds/light fixtures: Once per week. |
Please treat yourself to a professional deep-clean for the holiday. You deserve it. |

Sigh. Just approaching this list is zapping my life force. Because, like PPs, we mostly clean in reaction to guests/parties approaching. And I have both this weekend. I want house cleaners so bad.
Floors: Mostly just spot clean where kids spill, pets barf, etc. Actually mopping the hardwood? Once or twice a year on average. Vacuuming area rugs? 1-2 times month Bathrooms: When it starts to smell like pee (thanks DH and DS) or ahead of guests... at best twice a month? Really scrub shower/tubs: 3-4 times a year Change bed sheets: every 6-8 weeks Dust: for guests, or every 1.5-2 weeks on super obvious surfaces Inside of oven/microwave: Oven - I think once in the 14 years we've been in the house/ microwave every 6 months - a year Windows: Inside every couple of months if the dog has smeared his nose on it too much. Exterior never. Mirrors: Whenever the bathrooms get done. Stairways: Steps get vacuumed a couple times a month Empty out and scrub fridge: never unless there's some catastrophic spill Garage floors: n/a Baseboards: never except sometimes the bathroom ones when that's being cleaned Fans/blinds/light fixtures: only if I'm already messing with it to change a light bulb |

I can't answer these questions. Ugh. I need to go back to FlyLady.
All of those things before holidays. Beyond that? Once a month, generally speaking. Floors, more often. |
DH is adamant we can do this ourselves even though we have enough funds to pay someone to do it. He will die on this hill! So I'm pretty aware of how often it gets done. Everything is 1x weekly with the exception of windows, which are maybe 1x/year (we wipe smudges off inside when dusting), and garage floor, which DH uses the leaf blower to clean out a few times a year. Oh and I'll only do the microwave if it's bad before my mom visits because it's her particular area of nitpicking! I hate doing all of this on our own on the weekends but we split it up between the two days and our kids help so it's done in a few hours. Laundry is the area where I struggle...there's always a mountain somewhere. |
Ugh, same. It's so frustrating. And he has the nerve to frequently complain about the house being dirty/messy! |

So in my house, I am responsible for the main floor (kitchen, living room, and one bathroom) and husband is responsible for the basement and top floor (2 bedrooms and a bathroom.) I do NOT encroach on his territory. That being said...
Floors: Mine spot clean daily, his when it is filthy Bathrooms: Mine once a week, upstairs when it is filthy Really scrub shower/tubs: once a week Change bed sheets: probably once a month (this is the one I nag about) Dust: when I notice it Inside of oven/microwave: Oven basically never, microwave once a season Windows: Inside as needed, outside has never been done Mirrors: as needed Stairways: Stairway to outdoors gets swept weekly because it fills up with leaves and debris. Inside stairway probably twice a year Empty out and scrub fridge: twice a year Garage floors: never Baseboards: I do a little bit every day Fans/blinds/light fixtures: Whenever I notice dust |
I tried to earlier this year, and it was a disaster. The guy only stayed two hours, broke his vacuum and tried to fix the clog with my steak knife (I posted here about this), and missed a ton and then claimed he had to leave to move his car, rather than go out and feed his meter. I will try to work up to trying again, perhaps with an actual cleaner rather than someone off Task Rabbit. |
