I got yelled at for not buying enough gifts.

A grandfather-aged man getting upset about not getting more presents from his girlfriend’s DIL is the cringiest thing I’ve heard in a very long time.

We don’t go every year, in-laws are divorced so we already have to split the holidays 3-ways. Which means also gifting for the other side of his family.

Even when we don’t attend we’re still mailed gifts, put on the list for SS…etc.

No you don't. You don't HAVE to do anything. Disembark the crazy train OP.

This is the only sane answer. Why participate in this charade?

Some version of this to be sent by your husband:
Family, for Christmas, we have decided to purchase gifts for the kids plus one gift each to unmarrried adults (or insert whatever you want to do instead). We understand if this changes or eliminates the gifts we receive. We are happy to celebrate without receiving gifts. Looking forward to seeing you all.
Love, Larlo”

This is hilarious, thank you.

It’s a good time to see everyone together, we thought. But last Christmas we spent %90 of the time opening gifts, kids fell asleep while opening gifts , and we got to do nothing else.

So we’ll find a different time to travel.

We only do gifts for the kids in my family

Adults don’t need gifts

No, >10 because cringe grandpa boyfriend expects >1 apparently?

Your subject line says 'yelled at' -- seriously, if an adult is scolding you for not buying enough presents, that is not behavior I would reward with my presence OR my presents.

Problem solved. This random boyfriend won't be there next time. Don't worry about offending him.

I would miss the whole thing and never see them over the holidays again.

Seriously. Those people are nuts.

I would say, “no! This is madness! I’m not participating!” (In advance)

"Jim is in charge of all gifts for his family after I got yelled at last year. I hardly thing yelling at people is in the spirit of the holidays, so I bowed out of the whole thing. If you have any questions or concerns about gifts, talk to Jim."

At least 3 adults come with 10+ for each adult.

The younger family members feel pressured to buy at least 1 gift for each family member since they are now starting their entry level jobs and now can participate. Theirs only 1 couple with children so they bow out of gifting without any pushback. Plus MILs BF with the Roombas.
