If you have a 5-7yo kid, what do you do about car seats/taxis when traveling?

We used Mifold. We also had a bubblebum, but I like the mifold better.

Someone on a previous thread last year recommended the below and it's been a game changer. We use it with a booster for his comfort.

Driving in a city like New York is just as dangerous as highway driving.

Horrible.

Ha ha that is not at all true. Speeds are so much lower. Odds of surviving a 25 mph crash at 10x higher than a 50 mph crash.

I’m a third generation New Yorker and would never in a million years have a young child in a car in NYC without a car seat.

Okay. But a seven year old isnt really a “young child.” OP isn’t asking about kids who need to be harnessed.

My five year old is tiny. I rent a car to avoid this issue for him. My seven year old I would use one of those inflatable things.

7 year olds are way too young to safely ride in a car without a car seat or booster.

I always bring seats with me. Put them in a big duffle bag with a blanket.

I would have no qualms about taking a kid that age into an uber without a carseat.

Great for you. We prioritize our kid’s safety.

I have a ride safer vest and a bubble bum. I have used the ride safer vest in a taxi/Uber with a kid who wasn’t big enough for a booster and it worked great. I usually use the bubble bum as the 3rd booster when I’m driving an extra kid. Also works fine in a taxi/Uber. With either one, you need to be ready before you get in the taxi/uber. Try out the vest at home. Have the kid wearing it before you get the taxi. Have the bubble bum blown up and ready to go. One of my kids thinks the bubble bum is slippery. Other kid likes the height from the booster and doesn’t like the vest. I think it also depends on how long the car trip is.

My 5 and 7 year olds travel by uber with no seats in VA and DC with no issues. Recently when in NYC the uber driver had two boosters ready in the car. He said he would have canceled our ride if he didn’t have seats.

Really? When you are in a big city you lug a booster around all day so when you take a taxi you have it?

We all know you are just a better parent.

We have both and tend to bring the BubbleBum more often for our tall but light 7 year old.
