The city council election is heating up, too.

One current councilmember/candidate (David Muyles) is awaiting trial for domestic assault

And another (Adam Van Grack) may have lived in Gaithersburg until two years ago, but wont’t admit it?

These are certainly interesting characters for the elections. As a Rockville city resident, I certainly would vote with these issues in mind.

I was completely put off by the fact that when Ashton was asked her stance on the ballot initiative questions, she refused to give any answer at all. I may disagree with Mark on things, but at least he's thought about them enough to form and defend his position. I can't see how Ashton will get anything done.

How would you define progressive on City Council? They are non partisan.

Please... proposals to allow 16 year olds to vote? Non citizens to vote? Lots of Rockville money spent promoting events to celebrate pride, non European heritage, etc.

So are you saying that only progressives support expanding voting rights and celebrating aspects of the history/culture of Rockville residents?

I feel like I am voting strictly on personality, which isn't great, but the difference between Ashton and Pierzchala is striking. At the King Farm candidate's forum, he started arguing with a member of the audience. (This wasn't one of the City-sponsored forums.) Ashton has always been eloquent and polite (in my observation, at least).

I watched a City meeting earlier this year and Pierzchala dismissed another council member (Feinberg) who pointed out his memory was incorrect on a vote ("We all voted for it."). Feinberg said she was absent from that meeting and she did not vote in favor. When he knew she was correct, his response was a snarky & dismissive "Well, whatever." I think this is when the Council was discussing the various changes proposed by the Charter review.

I've been following Ashton for a few years, back when she was cluster rep for the RM cluster, and she has always been polished.

I know personality alone shouldn't drive my decision, but I cannot stand Pierzchala.

Honestly, voting on "personality", in the sense of skills/background/approach is about all you can do for this election. There doesn't seem to be a lot of distinction in policy stance. That is why I am voting for the candidates who have the most applicable skills/experience, and seem to be able to communicate and represent themselves (and hopefully the city) capably, competently, and collaboratively. Hard to discern from what is out there, but some rise to the top....

Just curious - are you referring to Fulton when you refer to voting for skills/background/approach and seem to be able to communicate? In the first forum, she said something like "We're all saying similar messages, so vote for who you think can get it done." That comment really stuck with me and I decided to support her based on it.

Same here..I was just going to vote for her based on the fact that there was something off-putting to me about Pierzchala (he seems kind of smarmy?). But she totally lost my vote when she refused to answer those ballot initiative questions. I ended up voting for Pierzchala, although in retrospect I should have just not voted for either.

I was the same way - Pierzchala was offputting to me. I've not voted for him in every previous election. But Ashton lost my vote when she wouldn't take a stance on any of the ballot initiatives.

I liked that she did not state a position on the ballot initiatives. Those ballot questions are not binding and I'm glad that the potential future major will consider the results of those questions before changing laws in Rockville.

Mark is fine. He’s very bright and tends to be above board but he’s not going to bring any new ideas to the table either. He hates the current mayor and they tend to fight a lot.

Given that it's been over a month since you asked OP what her unethical behavior on the PTA was, I'm going to assume OP just wanted to throw shade.

Skip to 41:25. This is supposed to be a fun neutral question that really shouldn't get more votes or less votes. Mark answers it then Monique comes off as a mean girl. I really don't want someone like this as Mayor.

Interesting you mention this debate. How about 1:02:20 where Mark gets into an argument with a resident and raises his voice?
