No safety concerns. I've also looked at the price differential between play airlines, Icelandair, ect flying to Europe. I don't check luggage (ever) and honestly my kids carry personal items (big backpacks with packing cubes...it honestly is all they need and all they are physically able to carry) so we typically only need 1-2 extra carry-on's and we are set between 4 people. I've seen some similar pricing a few times with Icelandair but most of the time (especially if you book it crazy early like 9-10 months in advance), the prices are extremely low and lower than anywhere else. They discount the prices for kids too, so make sure you plug it into their website -don't go 3rd party!! Ex: Spring break 2023, I flew BWI-London 1 adult+2 kids and 1 extra carry-on and I paid $350 pp. I could not have done that any cheaper. IAD-Copenhagen at Christmas $450 pp (2 adults, 2 kids +2 carry on's). I could have got tickets for $385 including carry-on's, if I had booked early January but I sat on it for 2 months. I constantly compared and tracked prices DC-Copenhagen with other airlines and was holding out a few months for a SAS airlines deal like I had gotten in 2022, but no, prices were much higher. There *WAS* a great deal with pretty much my same dates with SAS airlines to Copenhagen for the SAME PRICE that I paid with Play that I saw on googleflights and just for curiosity's sake, I went to see how it would work when you actually clicked it.....it was through a 3rd party and when I went to SAS airlines, the deal was already gone (I pretty much went to it within 2 hours of getting an email). There were some low prices I've seen recently with Icelandair, but then when you go to click on their website, the seats are already sold out so snagging one of those elusive cheap tickets is proving MUCH harder than it used to be, even with allll the flight strategies. I used to be able to snag those cheap flights by jumping on deals the same day (within a few hours of seeing the flights) but no longer. |
I flew with them this summer. The pilots were Icelandic, so I wasn't concerned about that. But the other staff did not conduct proper checks of the cabin during take-offs and landings. I had a window seat, and the people next to me had their bags on the floor. This happened on the flights to and from the UK. Every single flight I've been on (and I'm 55) has had a clear floor policy. No idea how much training the cabin staff have received, but they were all very young. |
| I just booked Play to Iceland for 3 people in June. It was still $800 cheaper than IcelandAir once I added in all the baggage, cancellation coverage, etc. I was a little surprised. Expected it to be closer in price. |
| Terrible experience. We missed our connection and no one was available at the Iceland airport to help us. They only have staff present certain times of the day. No one to talk to by phone. It was all chat. A mess. Would have had to stay over and take a plane the next day. I gave up and booked a regular airline to get to my final destination. |
I wish more airlines enforced carryon rules. The size and amount of bags some people bring on is a bit much. |
I’m the PP who booked them for June. At the very least, their baggage rules were comparable to IcelandAir. Whether IcelandAir just doesn’t enforce size is another issue. But if I recall what I was reading last night, checked bag size and weight was the same, carry-on size was very close, and Play’s personal item is smaller. A larger personal item, food & beverage service, and entertainment were not worth an extra $800 to me. I can bring my own snacks and download shows to my phone. I’ll be trying to sleep anyway. We’ll see how it goes. At least I don’t have a connection. My biggest worry is the airline goes under! In which case, I get a refund from the credit card. |
I think you should be okay for summer 2024. Demand continues to be very strong to Europe, and they should be able to get good revenue going near the end of winter for summer bookings. I would be cautious about summer 2025. My guess is that international demand will start moderating by then (like it has in the US now) as the pent up covid demand burns off. If you start to see reports in late fall 2024 of slowing bookings for summer 2025, that could be the death knell for Play, as it has been in the past for other airlines with this strategy. |
That’s good to know. Thanks! |
Every single one of these low fare trans-Atlantic airlines has gone out of business within 5 years or so. It's an impossible business long run because of the huge seasonality in the demand. It's just impossible to cover the fixed costs during the slow months unless you can absolutely have a killer peak season. Play and Norse Atlantic will surely be out of business within the next 3-4 years. Only question is exactly when. |
On cue! If I had a Norse booking for next summer I would be nervous. https://www.patreon.com/posts/norse-invest-47m-93748646? |
That just says they had a good quarter, got a cash infusion and probably hope to be bought by a bigger airline. Doesn’t give any reason to think they can’t make it til summer. |
And this is why these airlines are a risk. Bought a Norse ticket from Dulles to London for spring/summer 2024? Enjoy your refund and finding another ticket. https://www.patreon.com/posts/norse-wont-at-2-95852163? |
| Wouldn't "considering buying" be the correct English? |
