In one of the lesser known books of the Bible, Crazyviticus, Jesus found himself a trashy girlfriend with a palm-leaf stuffed "upper tunic" area, impregnanted her, cursed her out and suggested she'd be raped by a pack of...I don't know, tax collectors, maybe?...and knocked a couple of her teeth out (this being Biblical times, a full set of teeth was a remarkable thing, so this was a pretty harsh move on Jesus's part).

Really? You don't find it racist that his default thought process when having an angry unfiltered rant is that she'll get "raped by a pack of niggers"? I kind of do, and I'm not an AA woman. I think the rape by pack of niggers comment suggests he thinks (1) blacks = niggers = sub-Mel (white) beings; (2) blacks = rapists; (3) wait no, make that blacks = gang rapists. The guy clearly has a world of hate inside of him.

The point is that all we know about Jesus is the good stuff his followers recorded about him. Maybe he did do some pretty bad things that didn't make their way into the Gospels - said some racist stuff about the Nabateans, or had some fits of jealously or drunken rages etc.

And who knows what people will be saying about Mel Gibson in two thousand years' time? Perhaps Braveheart and Mad Max III - Beyond Thunderdome - will be remembered, long after these recent unfortunate lapses are buried beneath the sands of time....

Agreed. An anger management problem is one issue. What one actually says when angry doesn't just get pulled from outer space, though. It's from the soul. Apologies to Shakespeare, but there is a method to Mel's madness.

Even if he'd "politely" said "pack of African Americans" instead of using what is currently considered one of the most offensive slurs, he's still likening black men to dogs ("pack of") and, of course, defaulting to the notion that they are black, ergo, they rape. Mel Gibson has the kind of hate I have seen close-up in my family and it's just ugly. Agree with PPs that these statements don't just pop up from nowhere - you have to have it somewhere in your head before you can shout it out of your mouth.

The mere fact that Mel happily plays with Whoopi's kids in no way means that he's not a a racist. Every fucking racist has some token black friend who is their "best friend" they can point to. Thanks, Whoopi, for playing along. And I doubt Mel is scared of Whoopi's upper class black kids raping white women. It's BLACK MEN ("pack of n**rs") that Mel talked about in his bigoted rant.
