A Return to Face Masks

Would you like to elaborate? This is a real issue that is once again relevant. If masking your young kids doesn't bother you, great! I don't have that luxury.

Are you talking about masks on kids? Masks were never recommended for kids under 2, which is most of the daycare population.

That's just not true. Go to any daycare. The vast majority of children are 2 and up. When mask mandates were in place, the vast majority of children in daycare had to wear them.

Yup, my kids had to wear them when they were 3-5 years old. It was so absurd. They would show up in their little masks that don't really fit in the morning, play for a bit, and then all take them off for snack time. Then they would put them back on and play some more and then all take them off again for lunch. Then they stayed off for about 2 hours for rest time and 2nd snack, again all in the same room, before putting them back on to play until the end of the day. What did we accomplish with this, anyway? There were still parents upset when the mask requirement was lifted. I seriously question their critical thinking skills.

+1. A decent number of families at our daycare went back to making their kids (and sometimes themselves at drop off) this past week. Whatever floats your boat I guess but I don’t see the point. Not developmentally appropriate either. Other countries never masked toddlers/preschoolers.

*masking not making

If our daycare started requiring masks again, I would remove my child. It was never effective when they took them off for lunch and two snacks per day and I’m not doing it again.

Our adults are wearing masks and asking other adults to but kids.

*but not the kids

Kids aged 2-5 were wearing masks in daycare/preschool. There is no study showing it was effective for that age. Same with elementary etc. Esp with practices of removing for snack, lunch, nap, etc.

That's what the PP means by "never worked"

This. We masked little kids so that people with anxiety disorders would allow us to keep daycares open.

This is the most depressingly accurate take I’ve read on this.

The PP who thinks most of the daycare population is under age 2 clearly has no earthly idea what they are talking about.

Anonymous wrote:Masking a child under age 5 is stupid and should NEVER be required. If a health concern is actually a threat to children this age (Covid, for the record, is not -- it's less dangerous for kids this age than either the flu or RSV), then there are other much more effective options available (vaccine, health screenings before entering the school, testing, etc.). Kids this age do not wear masks properly, it remains difficult to find masks that both fit them properly and are effective, and daily masking in this age group poses risks regarding language acquisition and social-emotional development, especially over the long term.

My kid masked from age 2 to age 5 and it was the dumbest exercise. It is not the way to control spread of this or any other virus. Adults are capable of making correctly (though most don't). Kids this age are not and pretending they are is just magical thinking, not good public health policy.

Don't you remember? It's not about the risk to the young child! It's about the risk to the elderly. Many young children live with great grandparents in their 90s who have 10+ comorbidities and could DIE if they get Covid! The mental well being of young children is a small price to pay to ensure that 96 year olds LIVE longer!

At preschool back to school night this week the director said they have no plans to return to requiring masks. Apparently some parents had asked. Given that zero of the parents in attendance were wearing masks, I imagine there is no appetite for little kids in masks there. That's one of the reasons we chose the school --it didn't seem to be high anxiety about COVID compared to other places we toured last year. I really wanted my kid to see his peers ' and teachers' faces. This is in mid-Moco.

Agree. We did everything Vinay says starting early 2022.

Actually we don’t mask because of people like you with anxiety.
