With the rise of Covid, will preschools or childcare centers reintroduce face masks? I know it is early but wanted to know if anyone has insight. |
No. |
I can imagine individual daycare centers requiring masks on care providers working with infants. I see teachers masking voluntarily now.
I don't expect widespread masking policies, or any clear guidance from the CDC. |
I am with Vinay Prasad on this one: https://vinayprasadmdmph.substack.com/p/do-not-report-covid-cases-to-schools?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2 |
No. It never worked at the daycare preschool anyway because that was just theater. Masks were not properly worn or worn all day. It was just for show and to appease anxious parents or workers. |
yes we have insight, we can totally tell the future! |
Are you talking about masks on kids? Masks were never recommended for kids under 2, which is most of the daycare population. |
Masking a child under age 5 is stupid and should NEVER be required. If a health concern is actually a threat to children this age (Covid, for the record, is not -- it's less dangerous for kids this age than either the flu or RSV), then there are other much more effective options available (vaccine, health screenings before entering the school, testing, etc.). Kids this age do not wear masks properly, it remains difficult to find masks that both fit them properly and are effective, and daily masking in this age group poses risks regarding language acquisition and social-emotional development, especially over the long term.
My kid masked from age 2 to age 5 and it was the dumbest exercise. It is not the way to control spread of this or any other virus. Adults are capable of making correctly (though most don't). Kids this age are not and pretending they are is just magical thinking, not good public health policy. |
This. We masked little kids so that people with anxiety disorders would allow us to keep daycares open. |
That's just not true. Go to any daycare. The vast majority of children are 2 and up. When mask mandates were in place, the vast majority of children in daycare had to wear them. |
I really hope not. Our daycare is in a public school so we follow the public school system (MCPS).
Mask mandates are dumb overall, but for preschoolers they are just completely absurd. |
We are in San Francisco, a place that has overall been more Covid cautious than the rest of the country, and DS's preschool has everyone wear face masks indoors. They do most playing outdoors, but when inside it's always been masks on. |
Yes I've ready heard of it happening. |
Yup, my kids had to wear them when they were 3-5 years old. It was so absurd. They would show up in their little masks that don't really fit in the morning, play for a bit, and then all take them off for snack time. Then they would put them back on and play some more and then all take them off again for lunch. Then they stayed off for about 2 hours for rest time and 2nd snack, again all in the same room, before putting them back on to play until the end of the day. What did we accomplish with this, anyway? There were still parents upset when the mask requirement was lifted. I seriously question their critical thinking skills. |
Btw FU to everyone who was like "get over it, nobody is wearing masks anymore". As long as the AAP and the CDC continue to insist that masking 2 year olds makes any sense whatsover this is going to happen again. For some of us with children with poorly understood disabilties mask mandates are a real problem. Just goes to show how much our society HATES children. |
