Why is there so much income inequality in moco

The political leaders work to create safety net programs, which is great. They do not work to create long-term strategies for job and skills growth. So there isn't much chance of large portions of current safety net consumers making their way out to well paying jobs. We build safety nets, not ladders.

I think I’m a pretty typical “rich” MoCo resident. Moved to this area after school, lived in DC until kids, etc.

Honestly I could move to almost anywhere at this point and keep doing what I’m doing. I do like the area and enjoy my neighbors. It’s definitely my preference to stay.

MoCo’s progressive politics are a major turn off, however. Don’t follow the path of California, MoCo. It’s not hard to leave when you have options.

I agree completely. Between Proposition 13 and using environmental laws to prevent building more housing in areas where there is already housing, California's housing policy has been a disaster. California's highway building policy has also been a disaster, although that's not unique to California.

In va, there is very little crime and I feel perfectly safe walking around those “slummy” apartments. The people who live in them are mostly recent immigrants, and they want to work. They work hard, and they aren’t causing any problems crime wise. Can’t say the same about Wheaton.

In contrast, in Wheaton, the people who live in the apartments are mostly recent immigrants, who work - doing the jobs you wouldn't want to do at any level of pay, and certainly not the level of pay they are getting for their work.

Wheaton is just as safe as South Arlington, despite what the rabid anti-MoCo poster on here wants you to believe. Just check the Arlington PD crime reports -- South Arlington is not the crime-free utopia you're describing.

Well, then, Fairfax, Arlington, DC, and PG are importing poverty as well, because they have huge FARMs percentages also.
