Why is there so much income inequality in moco

Anonymous
That’s the question.
For a place that elects politicians that are so pro-egalitarianism why is there so much income inequality. I’ve seen Potomac and I’ve seen the slummy apartments in Wheaton and Silver Spring and the Soviet high-rises in White Oak.

Because MoCo goes out of its way to import poverty.

You can't come to this country with almost no education, no ability to speak English and almost no useful other skills and then cry about income inequality because all you can get are terrible jobs paying you $7/hr under the table to clean dishes and bathrooms at restaurants, or to work as a day laborer whongets picked up fke random jobs at the parking lot of Home Depot.

It really boggles my mind people push to import poverty with no limits, then complain about income inequality because huge sections of the county are here illegal from impoverished nations and they compare their wealth to our established citizens whom have educations, skills, and cam speak English. Of course poor people immigrated here illegally will have less wealth than our citizens. You can import poverty and then complain about inequality.

Oh my... many of us live very nicely in those areas as well. Most people cannot afford $1-3 million dollar houses in potomac even with good professional jobs.

These "Soviet high-rises"?

The ones that were built in 1966 and are currently owned by a private equity firm that has a goal of maximizing return for its investors?

Not really what I think of, when I think of the Soviet Union, but ok.

Umm because a lot of us are liberal here in moco it doesn’t make us communists. Capitalism is alive and well here in moco.

This is true everywhere in the DMV. For example, many people in 22207 in N Arlington would probably never dare to step foot in most parts of S Arlington where are the slummy apartments are located.

+1 The high rises in White Oak and other stupidly non-accessible locations were the f you from the last majority Republican County Council which approved all of them in a lane duck session after being voted out.

In what alternate dimension was the Montgomery County Council ever majority Republican?

Hmm...no. There really isn't. I lived in, and know people, in your so-called "slummy" apartments. They're OK, actually. Now I've moved up in the world and I'm in Bethesda.

Montgomery County is one of the richest areas of the nation, and also doesn't have a large proportion of people under the poverty line. MoCo has solid social services compared to other places in the US (not compared to some advanced European nations, obviously!). So while it entirely sucks to be poor, and I should know!!! - they do have some support available to them, notably for healthcare. MoCo on its own can't really declare independence from the rest of the US and start enacting social safety-net policies like France. You're seeing the effect of that.

Still a lot to be done, of course.

The alternate dimension that Montgomery County was in, in the 1960s, apparently. Also in the early 1950s.

The Enclave in Silver Springs hosts > 200 LEGAL refugee/SIV families from Afghanistan … in case anyone here still gives a crap about people whom we screwed over. They still need a lot of help. Even in that “slummy place” rents are high (> 2000$ for 2 bedrooms) for families who only have 1 member able to work a minimum wage job. And MoCo has strict occupancy limits so a family with 4 kids and only one breadwinner will truly struggle to afford anything

Right wing trolls concern-trolling each other, yawn.

Montgomery County is an economic powerhouse where rich and poor both come to grow wealth.

Taxes pay for robust social services safety net.

On what planet is MC an economic powerhouse? Overly robust social services only attract more low income residents.
