dog bit neighbor who reached over fence to pet him

I have never understood why people think they have a right to walk up to strange dogs and stick their hand out to let them. How would you feel if a stranger walked up to you and began petting you. Also, do not buy an apology gift. You are tacitly admitting that you ADOS something wrong and are guilty. Yes, you should simply check to see if neighbor is okay.

Dogs *on their own property, behind a fence!* Plus, the dog was barking at the neighbor, which is a clear sign to leave it alone. It doesn't matter that the neighbor had previously petted the dog. The responsibility for the bite is 100% with the neighbor, not on OP (or the dog). But yes, check on your neighbor's health.

Good advice.

Neighbor needs to seek medical care. The bite could become infected.

What.

And yes, OP, your dog sounds aggressive if it bit a neighbor who it presumably knows the sight and smell of.

Wrong. You can’t act foolish around any dog or else you may get bitten. Humans have brains and dogs act on instinct.

Why do people expect dogs not to bite? That's what they do.

It would be different if the dog climbed the fence and ran after the neighbor in her backyard, but this is not what happened. The neighbor foolishly/naively reached over the fence to pet the dog and got bitten.

Also, the neighbor reached over the fence. She came at a dog from above who was already barking and growling. None of that was smart. Sometimes dog owners have to be forceful. "No! He does not want you to pet him!"

Op,ask her if she would like a ride to get the wound checked. Next time someone wants to pet, advocate for your dog.

Why do stupid people pet unknown animals?

I sont know, but what does that have to do with OP's situation? The dog wasn't unknown to her neighbor. And why are people so hung up on fault and blaming the neighbor? She's old, ahe made a mistake, if she loses her arm or dies or something, will OP feel better because it wasn't her dog's "fault"?

OP might feel better knowing that she wouldn't be facing charges if it's not her fault. I know I would.

Do you always go 100% on the drama?

I'll rephrase PP's question. Why do stupid people pet a dog who is growling at them??

"Oh nice doggy... you know me.."

**CHOMP**

No shit, Sherlock.

OP, maybe you need a taller fence if your dog could reach someone over the fence.

It is not okay for a dog to bite an unthreatening old lady. Barking at her, yes... biting, no. I say this as the owner of German Shepherds. I'm feeling very judgy towards these obnoxious high-strung doodle dogs.

I hear where you are coming from, and I am not a fan of the breeds, but reaching across a fence is dangerous. Dogs are super territorial. It's not a defect; it's their instinct.

I agree that old lady neighbor shouldn't have reached over the fence-but owner OP says she was right there. Why didn't she command her barking, aggressive dog to stop or lay down or whatever? What if a child had reached over the fence?

The dog seems aggressive.
