General complaint: people are THE WORST

Anonymous
Oh yes. Hell is other people, but it became worse when I became a parent- then you have to put up with a lot of crap and deal with people you normally wouldn’t have to deal with through your kids.
Anonymous
Nobody else finds it ironic that people on this site are calling people rude and selfish?
Anonymous
Agreed. I was at the airport for too many hours yesterday and there were so many adults watching videos on their phones without headphones. It's rude.

wow. This statement just screams lack of humanity. I hope you’re not a parent

I wouldn't phrase it as PP did, but this is a safe space for complaining about other people and it is frustrating when they smell really bad and then sit very close to you. I have empathy for homelessness and make efforts to help people who are unhoused, but I'm not going to pretend I don't mind if an unhoused person gets really close to me when they smell really bad. I have a nose. It's a normal reaction.

Hell, truly, is other people.

Feel free to explain how terrible people are here. I will validate ALL your complaints.

Correction:

DC people are THE WORST.

Move to any normal part of the USA, and people living there act like, well, people (not the a-holes and rude, self-important, narcissists who infest DC).

Agree that the behavior is prevalent here, but it permeates into other areas, as one can see by the reality television types out and about. Really, no one gives a flying care what you have to say at maximum volume.

Have some self awareness, so that people do not think so much less of you. When you leave your table, we all laugh at you, and your lack of upbringing, if you are loud and/or self important. We simply do not want to hear you. What you have to say at your table is not important (if your conversation was that important, presumably you would know enough to have it in private), and your leased car does not impress anyone, because it is the same exact car that most of your type is driving.

No.

Well, when people see it come to life, it takes on a third dimension.

No.

I would have sent her my Venmo, and waited for it to be sent. Hell no, I am not supporting your Starbucks habit.

Some people on this site are quite nice. Jeff is nice. Many posters are generous with their time and offer thoughtful feedback, advice, and support.

But also, if you spend any time at all on DCUM, you are also aware that people are in fact THE WORST, so it makes perfect sense that this thread is posted here.

DP here. I get it, but presumably you know better than to make a show of it. Seems many here like the dramatics, which only make them look worse than say, an unhoused person.

Why? Perhaps if she had not just been extremely rude in carrying on what should have been a private telephone conference right next to me in a public space, I might have bought her a coffee because whatever it's a coffee. But she treated a public space like it was her living room and then expected me to buy her drink.

No.

Of course I would never let on, but I might get up and move the way I would move away from any foul smell. Again, normal reaction.

Our society has condoned, encouraged and supported our sense of self entitlement. We all deserve something. We are all owed something. We have regressed to toddlerhood where we think the world revolves around us. We are afraid to speak up because we are also entitled to lash out at anyone who challenges our entitlement.

Like most of us in the city or populated suburbs, I live near a bunch of Starbucks and every one of them is always full of people on their bulls***. It’s not a place to study or do work anymore. Maybe it used to be but not since at least 2015 if not earlier. It’s full of loud talking people, usually on the phone. Sketchy business meetings for what sounds like MLM’s or sketchy financial services. People asking for cash. I’ve seen the prayer meetings and relatively large meetings of political/civic groups in very small Starbucks locations, taking up nearly every table in the place. That drives me particularly up the wall because I’m in the suburbs and Panera and Wegmans with the tables/seating areas are close by and much larger. And honestly probably quieter. I’d sooner take my laptop to the buffet seating areas at Wegmans or Whole Foods at this point vs. a cramped Starbucks with people on their worst behavior.
