I usually send an email. Are you a FF? If so, e-mail and they will give you voucher or points. The gate agents are usually swamped when flights are delayed, I wouldn’t bother them. |
| 5 hours is a big deal to me. SW gave everyone $200 vouchers when we had a flight that was delayed 5 hours. It's worth asking. |
It holds companies accountable. There has to be a well-documented reason for a flight delay beyond 3-4 hours- pending distance- that is completely outside the airline's control. Mechanical issues are not an exemption. 3 hours delayed and under 1500KM you get 250 or canceled (even if they rebook you) within I think it is 14 days before travel, 4 hours or over 1500KM you get 600, same rules regarding cancellations. The airlines can't just willy nilly decide they want to cancel or delay a flight or give up trying to find alternatives. Believe me, any airline flying to/from or within Europe feels it when that plane doesn't take off as scheduled with minimal delays. And it's the law so they don't have a choice. We have been paid more than our flights were. |

If in the US, read your conditions of carriage.
The airline is only required to guarantee you passage between the two cities booked. The time, the date, even the seat you booked are never guaranteed. That being said, you can ask for compensation but wouldn’t you rather a required part break on the ground than in the air. It is not like an airline has the part at an outstation. They can ask another airline operating a similar type but no guarantees it would be available. Remember the airlines make no money when the plane isn’t flying so they don’t want delays anymore than you do! |
I mean they sort of do if they aren't willing to compensate passengers and they rebook them when space is available, which is sometimes days later. Customers paid for the tickets, the airlines aren't refunding them, and they fill-up empty space on other flights. Seems like it is a win-win in the US for airlines, not so much the customers. |
| If it’s weather, they won’t do a thing. Welcome to summer thunderstorm season. Always fly in the morning in summer. |
Cancelled flights are always refunded. That isn’t the issue. People are wanting additional compensation beyond their money back. |
