Would you pay $10k to rent a beach house?

OP here, I appreciate that. I love the beach, this one in particular. I love amazing fully decked out beach houses. We haven’t gone since CoVid, so in addition to my parents and a few of the family members that have committed, I actually really want to do this.

I’ve stayed in many, many top-dollar beach rentals. Very high end. But even the most expensive places on the most desirable beaches are never “fully decked out.” I have been in several that have the flimsiest blinds/window coverings ever, that never block out any sun. Dull knives, flimsy cutting boards, ancient can openers. I wish beach house lovers would have more self-awareness about what it actually is.

If you love that type of vacation, PAY FOR IT and invite others to join you, if you want the pleasure of their company. But don’t act like it’s some giant favor.

Some those giant beach house are expensive, and quite dirty and depressing. Sure, they have a pool - but we have a pool just up the street, without driving all those hours in traffic.

Only if I could afford if the others didn't come/pay.

10k is steep for me right now, but it’s all about context.

I grew up mc and would share a condo with only my parents and siblings when at the beach. My parents have always been too cheap and frugal to consider renting an entire house in a nice location. Last year I rented a beachfront townhouse for a week and invited them - good times, good memories. We’ve got a lot going on this summer, but are now at an income where we don’t need to worry about spending 5-6k on a house rental. Next summer we are going to rent a nice beachfront house for the three of us, parents, and my siblings family. It’s going to be great and I’m sure my parents will remember it for the rest of their lives.

$5k?

Get the place you want to get, and invite people if you want them there. But don’t ask them for money. That is so tacky.

If you can’t afford to pay for it, but want a group vacation, start from *scratch* and be open to other ideas besides the beach. People might want to at least discuss a mountain house/mountain resort, an island destination, Arizona, a cruise, etc. Not everyone thinks East Coach beach houses are great vacation spots. Many people find them boring and way too overpriced for the actual experience.

I have only done this with committed families. I would not do it with my own wishy washy family. I too have trouble committing so no judgment but would go about something cheaper I could cover so its no loss either way. I will say that those big beach house vacations have left me with amazing memories years on.

No way nor would I pay more than $1k.

It would depend on how long you’re renting it for and how big it is. Also, what’s included, amenities , proximity to the beach, etc.

4 nights, oceanfront, nice stretch of beach on NC coastline, brand new, all updated amenities. It looks fully booked except for that one weekend I am looking at.

10K for a long weekend???? Nope

+1. Plus “four nights” also means one of those days is sunk with waiting to get the key/having to rush straight into dinner, and then the other morning at the end is race through getting some BS checklist done. I cannot believe people consider that a “vacation” and pay that much for the non-pleasure.

By myself, no. With two other families at a driveable location, yes.

My husband would laugh if I suggested $10k for 4 nights at the beach. But I understand the need to create memories with grandparents. If you can swing it, go for it.

No.

No, but knowing people who pay that much for 5 days at Disney makes me kind of nauseous too. At least at the beach you can relax and hang out with family members you don't normally get to hang out with, by the pool no less!

What if the family members live close by?
