Contraceptive for DD heading to college

Has your DD asked for birth control OP? Do all the girls talk to their mother today about bc? This thread has made me realize I am very old.

And you were so smart and clever to avoid being raped.

I did avoid it, yes.

I heard IUD is painful and DD is not yet sexually active. What about the patches? I understand daily pills is hard to manage for college students.

DP.

Better she has it, and not need it, than finding out she wants / needs it, and does not have it.

But nothing protects from STIs like condoms. Those are a must !

They make smaller, teen-size IUDs just for teen girls. Ask your Gyn; she will know about them.

Good thing about the IUD is a distracted teen can’t forget about it like the pill.

Be offended, then. Because if OP’s daughter gets pregnant, the burden of raising the child will fall on OP as it always does in such situations. Not to mention, OP’s daughter might not know yet if she’ll want to be sexually active, but if/when she does in the heat of a moment, she needs to have contraception.

Obv OP is going to have a conversation with her adult daughter headed to college to see if she is wanting to get contraception. Her daughter would say no if not interested and OP has to accept that.

It isn’t hard to get contraception. And school heath center can provide this if/when she is ready if she doesn’t want to just yet.

You can get IUD at college heath center? Or just condoms

Depends on the school re: condoms.

You can get an IUD at Planned Parenthood. If you either do not have insurance or want to get one without your parents knowing, unless you can prove you’re very low-income, it’s about $800 in cash.

I would ask her what she thinks? As my kids get older I’m really trying to mom less and empower them to make choices with some light guidance. Where does she think she should go? Does she want to be on BC? If so what type might she like? Ask her what kind of doctor she would like to see.

I’m really surprised though that you have a daughter that is headed off to college and she has never seen a gynecologist. This was our first stop after my daughter got her first period.

Really? I don't know anyone who has brought in a daughter that young. At our gyno/ped the standard is 18 years old or whenever you may become sexually active, whichever comes first.

I don’t have a gyn until I got pregnant

Where do we start? Appointment with Pediatrician or going to a gyn directly (she doesn’t have one yet)

Best to set up appointment with gynecologist - either physician or experienced NP.

American pediatric association recommends IUDs for teens. Many teens forget to take the pill. Hormonal IUDs also help with dysmenorrhoea (painful periods).

Gyn visits generally start at 21.

My DD got her IUD replaced at her college health center (switched types) - It just depends on the school.

She did gain weight with the Mirena but still prefers it over the copper IUD (she tried that first because BC pills made her sick/nauseous).

I didn't ask my mom to take me to the gyn or for birth control before college - but you know who took me - my college BF. So that's who is going to do it if not their mom.
