Expensive private colleges & a couple state schools (instate too, such as W&M) are expensive.

The rest are relatively reasonably priced. Also in DCUMland the 4-year, residential college experience without kid having to contribute anything or take out loans is considered a rite of passage.

I live in DC, so I realize I consciously chose to live in a location without good in state options. That said, as exemplified here, even solid state options can be pricey. Our lowest cost option (Pitt with 5K/year merit plus DCTAG (10K/year towards out of state tuition)) would have been 35K/year. That is not bad in my mind but it is still $140K over 4 years, which is a lot of money.

Pitt is one of the most expensive publics in the US.

It is lower than the cost of attending UVA and W&M as noted in this thread.

I went to University of California in the 80s. Tuition (fees) was then less than $1000/year. It is now $17K/year, I think Cal state is around $10K/year. Plus room and board which is similar across schools.

I am not complaining about the cost for my personal situation, we have planned for and can afford college and are the proverbial donut hole. My point is that yes, it is expensive, even state schools are expensive. Please identify the total cost of attendance, including room and board, these great state schools that are a bargain.

Hi Pitt! Waving at you from Montgomery County! 👍. We’ll see you there. Yes, we are donuts too. Kid won’t get near UMD.

And forgot to add. Considered W&M, but at $65,000 OOS. Ooof. Too much.

Congrats! Was merit aid a factor in your decision? What other schools did you find to be generous?

Somewhat of a factor but she had several acceptances that were all initially around $30-$35k (Allegheny, SMCM, Washington College) plus UMW for $17k. That was all merit, no need aid. Juniata added a bit more for attending an event and then she auditioned for and received an additional music scholarship. Music opportunities were the biggest tipping factor vs. other schools that also had great environmental science programs but not exactly what she wanted for music. She also just preferred the vibe/community feeling there vs. others.

Pitt is state related. It isn't a public university in the same way UMD/UVA/Ohio State/etc. are.

Ok? The PP specifically stated “less merit”. Her kid has a scholarship you dolt! So much for trying to prove people wrong.

really? I thought they are in line with others. UC, UVA are more expensive OOS and UNC is about the same. UTA is probably cheaper but not by much. Umich is probably the most expensive one for OOS.
