Bit by dog - wwyd?

If it’s not deep, I wouldn’t go to the doctor unless there’s a sign of infection, but if there is any sign I would go right away.

As for reporting it, I probably wouldn’t in most cases but you certainly are within your rights to do so.

The more I think about it, the more I think you need to contact the neighbor to get proof of up to date rabies vaccination.

call the police and let them sort it out

Dh thinks rx antibiotics are in order. Is this overkill?

I don’t know this neighbor but he was very nice and apologetic. Said it’s a rescue dog and can get frightened. Said dog is up to date on shots. I’m worried about neighborhood kids and anxious about it biting someone else again. Also not sure whether to see a dr without seeming dramatic. WWYD if anything?

You need to check your instinct? Why would you pout your hand near a dog's mouth?

I'd wash with soap and call it done. And be more careful when putting my hand in a dog's mouth.

No way. Please please report this OP. I have young children and people have gotten out of control with not keeping their dogs in check. Next time it could be a kid's face! Was the dog off leash? If so please report that too.

Are you kids going to be stupid and put their hand in a dog's mouth? And just so you know it was Op's fault, not the dogs. I don't know why people sneak up on you or when your dog is barking at them they continue to walk towards you instead of pausing and letting you go to the other side. Nope! They keep coming!!

You didn’t get the neighbor’s contact?? Arguably you could get a tidy settlement, and the dog would be put down and at no risk of harming others

You don't kill a dog when a person puts their hand in the dog's mouth. It didn't sound like it was even that bad.

I agree it's foolish but could OP have meant putting her hand out to guard her face or push the dog away?

humans naturally use their hands as their first line of defense. Whether you’re tripping, your first instinct is to put your hands out to protect you, if you’re being attacked by somebody your first instinct is to put your hands out in front of you to protect yourself.

Uhhh no it was the dog owner's fault for not keeping their aggressive dog away from others. Yes little kids have no sense of safety and could easily put their hand up to protect their face. People do not "sneak up on you." It is your job to make sure your dog is leashed cannot reach them. The sidewalk is for everyone, and yes little kids like to run. At the very least, you should retreat up a driveway to let others pass safely.

It has definitely been MY experience that people sneak up on me. Sorry you don't believe me but it happens. Kids are the worst when they come running at you arms waving demanding to pet your dog! Even when said dog is barking and saying to them "KEEP AWAY DEMON CHILD" Of course the sidewalk is for everyone but, have some common sense and don't crowd a dog who is barking at you. Just take a pause and let the owner find a way to get around you safely.

I think this is a little harsh but in that same thought process, I am always amazed at how many people keep coming toward dogs when they see them barking or appear over excited or a dog walker who doesn’t seem to have control of their dog(s). They don’t even give the owner a chance to turn around or step off the path to calm their dog. I’m a dog owner and even though my dog is not leash reactive, I avoid walking closely to other dogs on leashes or even people without dogs. When I’m walking without my dog, I never walk up close to a dog that I don’t know. Maybe because I have a dog, but my reaction to a jumping dog would not be to put my hand down. I’d likely raise my knee and turn but again that could easily be because I’ve always been around dogs.

Only on DCUM do people blame the person for sticking their hand near a dog's mouth when of course they are trying to defend themselves and push it away.

OP, that dog shouldn't have been able to get close enough to bite you. And the whole "mouthing" thing is just dumb. It's a strange dog on the street. You do not let your dog put any part of a stranger in their mouth whether it's a playful nip or an actual attack.

If you're really worried about other people and kids in your neighborhood, you need to get the owner's contact info and light a flame under them. They should have a muzzle on the dog.
