Walking down the sidewalk I was passing a neighbor with 2 large dogs (goldens). One of them jumped at me and by instinct I put my hand out and it grabbed my entire hand and the man had to pull him off. Luckily it only punctured one finger but nothing that needs stitches. Dh thinks rx antibiotics are in order. Is this overkill? I don’t know this neighbor but he was very nice and apologetic. Said it’s a rescue dog and can get frightened. Said dog is up to date on shots. I’m worried about neighborhood kids and anxious about it biting someone else again. Also not sure whether to see a dr without seeming dramatic. WWYD if anything?
You need to check your instinct? Why would you pout your hand near a dog's mouth?
I agree it's foolish but could OP have meant putting her hand out to guard her face or push the dog away?
humans naturally use their hands as their first line of defense. Whether you’re tripping, your first instinct is to put your hands out to protect you, if you’re being attacked by somebody your first instinct is to put your hands out in front of you to protect yourself.
Only on DCUM do people blame the person for sticking their hand near a dog's mouth when of course they are trying to defend themselves and push it away. OP, that dog shouldn't have been able to get close enough to bite you. And the whole "mouthing" thing is just dumb. It's a strange dog on the street. You do not let your dog put any part of a stranger in their mouth whether it's a playful nip or an actual attack. If you're really worried about other people and kids in your neighborhood, you need to get the owner's contact info and light a flame under them. They should have a muzzle on the dog.
