Walking down the sidewalk I was passing a neighbor with 2 large dogs (goldens). One of them jumped at me and by instinct I put my hand out and it grabbed my entire hand and the man had to pull him off. Luckily it only punctured one finger but nothing that needs stitches. Dh thinks rx antibiotics are in order. Is this overkill?
I don’t know this neighbor but he was very nice and apologetic. Said it’s a rescue dog and can get frightened. Said dog is up to date on shots. I’m worried about neighborhood kids and anxious about it biting someone else again. Also not sure whether to see a dr without seeming dramatic. WWYD if anything? |
| You need to see a doctor and you need to report it. |
The doctor will probably report it. |
|
You definitely need antibiotics if there is bleeding / puncture.
BTW I'm sorry this happened. My DD was bitten by a rescue dog in a similar situation and the owner actually started laughing. I think if I ever see her again I might strangle her myself. |

Seems like overkill. You put your hand in the dog's mouth and got scratched on a tooth when the dog was pulled away?
I'd wash with soap and call it done. And be more careful when putting my hand in a dog's mouth. |

No way. Please please report this OP. I have young children and people have gotten out of control with not keeping their dogs in check. Next time it could be a kid's face! Was the dog off leash? If so please report that too. |
You didn’t get the neighbor’s contact?? Arguably you could get a tidy settlement, and the dog would be put down and at no risk of harming others |

Go to the doctor if your hand is swollen, red, and warm. The doctor will report any bites. I wouldn’t bother if you have full or close to full movement of your hand.
I’ve been bit on my hand and have also received bloody scrapes/nips from mouthing. I wouldn’t bother a doctor for the latter. |
| Did the dog actually bite down? There is a difference between a bite and a nip or if just mouthing. That’s what makes the difference. If the dog was being aggressive vs playing. |

Seems like the dog was acting in a playful manner rather than in a vicious, attack mode.
Clean wound with hydrogen peroxide, then use an antibacterial cream/ointment. If the cut gets red & swollen, then antibiotics will be needed. Based on your post, I would not report this minor, playful incident--but, I wasn't there, you were, so you know better than I do whether it was a vicious, attack or an energetic, playful moment. Either way, the concerned dog owner needs to keep his pups away from strangers. |
No stitches even required and you think OP is going to get a pay day and they are going to put the dog down. You are dreaming |
| my neighbors dog bit my leg while I was riding by on my bike. I stopped in and asked if it was up to date on its shots and that was it |

I have been bitten twice, once by a dog and once by a cat. Both broke the skin, but only the cat bite was a deep puncture wound.
Only the cat bite got infected and required antibiotics. I went to the doctor right away for that one because it hurt so bad. They were actually pretty worried about necrotizing fascitis, drew perimeters around the red areas with sharpie, and made me come back a couple of times to check the spread. The dog bite was mostly bruising, but with a shallow scrape that did break the skin. I cleaned it, treated it with Neosporin, and kept an eye on it. It was fine. |

I would go to the doctor to get antibiotics. Is there anyway you can contact this neighbor just to be sure that they have the rabies shots? If you can’t, then the prudent thing would be to get those rabies shots even though I think it’s overkill, better to be safe then sorry.
