Bit by dog - wwyd?

Anonymous
Definitely report it. There should be a record for if and when the dog bites again.

A dog on my street was regularly left on a leash in the front yard. It bit the kids going to school.

VA has a one bite rule so it is good to have it reported.

Hope you feel better, OP.

I'd wash with soap and call it done. And be more careful when putting my hand in a dog's mouth.

No way. Please please report this OP. I have young children and people have gotten out of control with not keeping their dogs in check. Next time it could be a kid's face! Was the dog off leash? If so please report that too.

Are you kids going to be stupid and put their hand in a dog's mouth? And just so you know it was Op's fault, not the dogs. I don't know why people sneak up on you or when your dog is barking at them they continue to walk towards you instead of pausing and letting you go to the other side. Nope! They keep coming!!

Oh please.

No, my kid was minding their own business riding on a bike when a dog ran after him on the street and bit him. Keep your dogs by you and on a short lease.

I don’t know this neighbor but he was very nice and apologetic. Said it’s a rescue dog and can get frightened. Said dog is up to date on shots. I’m worried about neighborhood kids and anxious about it biting someone else again. Also not sure whether to see a dr without seeming dramatic. WWYD if anything?

You didn’t get the neighbor’s contact?? Arguably you could get a tidy settlement, and the dog would be put down and at no risk of harming others

This is what is wrong with our society.

I’d only go to the doctor if it gets infected.

Don’t listen to this genius.
See a doctor if the skin was punctured. Dog’s mouths are full of bacteria. They may give you antibiotics. Make sure the dogs are up to date on their rabies shots.

Spoken like an irresponsible dog owner.

If it punctured and broke the skin you need antibiotics.

Uhhh no it was the dog owner's fault for not keeping their aggressive dog away from others. Yes little kids have no sense of safety and could easily put their hand up to protect their face. People do not "sneak up on you." It is your job to make sure your dog is leashed cannot reach them. The sidewalk is for everyone, and yes little kids like to run. At the very least, you should retreat up a driveway to let others pass safely.

A dog isn't aggressive if it barks at you. Barking is a way to communicate. It can mean "let's play" or "you need to get away from me" Dogs who are punished for barking will sometimes skip the bark and just go to the bite becasue humans aren't listening.

Any update, OP?

When my son was a toddler he was bit on the hand by a dog when we were in petco; it broke skin but it was small. I was holding my son and as we walked by the woman who was holding her dog, my son reached his hand towards the dog and the dog bit him. The dog owners were really upset, and they called me numerous times to check on my son I just washed it with soap and water at home and used Neosporin. I didn't know it required a doctor visit; luckily it healed just fine without any problems.

I did go to urgent care and received oral antibiotics and a tetanus shot since I had a puncture. Glad I did bc next day it got red and swollen but has since subsided as meds kicked in. I’ll never assume a dog quickly coming at me just wants to say hi again. I’ve heard so many times in this scenario to offer a hand to let it smell you so it was kind of reactionary. Never again lol. Pretty dumb looking back.

Someone asked if it was just playful and nipped - no unfortunately the dog was not happy and latched on. Guy said he’s a rescue and gets scared of people sometimes. It was a very scary experience that could have been way worse.

Also to clarify the dog was leashed, but had enough slack to come close to me as I walked by on the narrow sidewalk. Mans back was turned as he was tending to the other dog. So just really bad timing.

Victims should not be blamed. Saying it is OP’s fault is like saying a robbery victim’s fault for wearing jewelry.

OP, you are nervous about bite. Go to doctor. Doctor will decide about treatment not DCUM

Correct. If the skin is broken, you need antibiotics because the bacteria in the dog’s mouth can (in rare situations) cause a nasty infection. Once you start to get sick, it’s harder to get control of the infection, so it’s best to act quickly. And yes, the doctor is a mandated reporter.
