Leaving BVR

we've had three through Beauvoir, it's plenty academic, great school. People leave early for a variety of reasons already addressed, to be with siblings, move, change in finances, want k to 12 earlier, etc.

We had three through Beauvoir, too, and I laughed at the “lack of academic preparation” worries. Our kids did great academically and are too students at their current schools.

Current BVR family: it’s plenty academic.

If you want worksheets and cursive lessons in PK, go somewhere else. If you want developmentally appropriate teaching for young children who are happy, choose BVR hands down.

Washington Waldorf is a great option to check out. Lot's of outdoor time. etc.

If your kid wants ncs or sta then you should stay. As a current family I’ve never heard of kids leaving early go to sidwell, maret or gds

I can see a family wanting to leave as they get closer to 4th and realize that NCS or STA might not be the best fit for their kid. It's hard to know what type of School your child will like/need when they are in Pre-K. My oldest who was applying to 4th this year (not from BVR) disliked NCS so much on the visit she didn't even want to continue the application. Her sister enjoyed the BVR visit, but we ultimately chose another school (that my oldest liked) for both that felt like a better fit for the family.

What do you want to leave BVR? We want to apply there, what is the problem?

Only complaint I’ve heard is it’s not very academic. So 4th grade might be an awakening unless you go to another slow glide path school.

We are starting there - what does "not academic" mean? Will we have to do prep outside of school for the NCS entrance exam?

no, you’ll be fine! if your child isn’t a good fit for NCS/STA (this does happen to a handful of students) you’ll know early enough in the admission process. the test isn’t difficult acc to my child and others. my daughter has done well in her several years at NCS and was well-prepared. it’s not an easy school by any means but most girls from BVR do just fine.

PP- thanks!! Kiddo starts in the fall and we are excited and nervous! Ultimately it was hard to choose between two schools but Beauvoir won out because of the relationship between the Cathedral schools.

+1. 4th grade is usually a step up academically in all schools, but with Beauvoir kids having to adjust to a new school that year, it can be a bit of a shock.

I knew families who left BVR for WES, and were very happy. They wanted a more diverse student body and a more welcoming community.

We just thought, “Why are we paying all of this money to go to this school and they’re not helping us?!?” It was a very eye opening experience and I still have a lot of negative feelings towards the school because of it.

We felt the same at St. Andrew's.

If you leave before 2nd, how does NCS/STA know if they only request grades and recommendations from 3rd and 2nd grade? I know the schools are tied, but I [naively] didn't realize BVR was privy to the applicant pool at NCS/STA.

Isn’t that true of most kids entering NCS / STA in 4th grade? Which schools have similar workload before 4th grade?
