+1 thought I'd argue that Oxford mom is absolutely right to post since the OP is asking about a path to PhD specifically so she's 100% on topic. |
+1. I've stopped reading and posting on DCUM because of the unnecessary nasties. Today was an aberration. |
No doubt Oxford mom (or dad) started this thread for exactly that reason. |
No, I didn't but AMA |
You’re identifying. |
Did they have a masters before going to Oxford or somehow get out of that? |
When I was looking at graduate programs, I was warned that although a certain Oxbridge college had the best stash of materials for my chosen topic, no U.S. institution was going to hire me to teach with a DPhil. I was shocked, but it was my department chair, so he clearly knew about hiring. Has that changed, or is your kid planning to do something else with their degree? |
MPhil Oxford; DPhil Oxford but some students go straight in to the DPhil. 4 years total |
Definitely correct. There are over a hundred libraries at Oxford, the Bodlein being the most famous and one of the oldest in Europe. Most if the libraries have foreign language collections that no one else does. DC currently is prepping for the lsat. Yes the masters work ties in with law |

Either would work. You should choose based on fit.
The NSF keeps track of where U.S. PhD recipients did their undergraduate degree. The NSF/IPEDS data site is notoriously difficult to use, but there is an easier to use site here that will tell you how many PhDs by field were earned by graduates of colleges. It is raw numbers, so you should try to take into account the enrollment. The other thing to consider is that the popularity of majors between schools differs. https://www.highereddatastories.com/2020/12/baccalaureate-origins-of-doctoral.html |
| Just don’t. There are very few tenure track positions at decent schools. But on balance, if you must do this, I’d go for UVA in political science. |
Why would your child get a masters and DPhil and THEN go to law school? Why didn’t they go right after or shortly after undergrad? You’re not making sense. |
Not that parent, but if you’re gunning for H or Y, you’d better have something special in addition to your perfect lsat score. |
Boasting about an obviously impressive achievement is a fine. Oxford parent has taken over the thread. I’m sure Op would like more info than a sample size of one. |
Joint JD/PhD program, maybe? |
