Thats awful. My K kid had a Chromebook last year but she never took it home. Same in 1st this year. They use them at school but they dont come home. Thank goodness. It can be done, raise this issue to your principal. |
Well yes that’s why I said that. Sounds like at least one other school is too, including kinders with laptops which is just terrible. Parents have complained about having to bring the laptops to and from school. The school says they can’t put mass charging stations into our building without a major overhaul of the electrical wiring or something. Probably an excuse from Facilities who doesn’t want to spend the $$ on it. It is an older building. |
| I'm at MCPS and my K has a Chromebook. Seems like a similar idea. |
My 6th grader carries laptop back home every day. His light speed report often showed more than 4 hours laptop daily use. He said teacher made them taking notes on their computer. In WIN time, they can listen music on YouTube while studying as long as they wear headphone or use very low volume. He said this is allowed by teacher. His report also showed a lot hits on google. He said that's for class projects. He said he didn't play games but other kids did. Do teachers have capability to control the access to games? |
They leave them at school, they are labelled and/or in cubbies. They only pull them out during specific times -- for example, if the teacher is pulling small groups for reading, the other children will rotate through either doing Lexia/myOn on their iPads and reading books from the classroom library. |
This is not true - our school is sending them home to be charged. Older kids are using them for group projects/homework. My 4th grader doesn't use it at home, he said there are some kids that try to go on YouTube at school, but the teacher shuts that down very quickly. |
She gets to keep her chromebook at school and has one at school - MCPS. |
chromebook at home and separate chromebook at school - coffee not kicking in yet. |
+1 Spend that money on ACTUAL BOOKS. So awful that we’re handing kindergartners iPads. |
+1 I subbed for a week in a 1st grade classroom (granted, not K but close enough) and spent 90% of my time trying to sort out laptop problems - some weren’t charged, some froze, some kids weren’t able to log in, some (many) went on YouTube… the list was endless. Those laptops were the most ridiculous, stressful part of the day (aside from the disruptive students). At several points, I finally just took all the laptops away and read books to the class. That was the ONLY time everyone was quiet and focused on me. Bring back books. These young kids do not need computers/iPads in the classroom. |
| I'm in LCPS and every K has a chrome book. So much for keeping our kids off minimal screens for the first 5 years of their life. I had no idea they'd go off to K and spend 5 hours a day on a laptop. |
NP. Instead of reading books, the ipad actually has videos of people reading books to them! I'm not a luddite but I think 4th grade would be a good year to introduce laptops and typing for reports. Kids have the rest of their lives to spend chained to laptops. |
That's funny. We're trying to ban all the books in schools (as a nation). See H.R. 5, "Parents Bill of Rights Act." And in case that fails, we'll go state-by-state. Just look at all the states that want parents to be able to opt out of any lesson (in a textbook or otherwise). Some states have actually passed that legislation. Florida has already made it illegal to keep any book that any person finds objectionable on a school library bookshelf. Guess what? Some person can find something objectionable in literally every book ever written. But sure. Let's spend the money on actual books. I'm not saying that kids need more technology. I'm just not convinced buying books that will just be censored and banned solves any of these issues. (and I'm a second-generation librarian, who loves books.) |
PP here. My K brings her Chromebook home so we can charge it. She has probably taken it in less than a dozen times this school year. I let her play on it at home though because it's educational and fun for her. I would be upset if she were on it every day at school, especially since it's heavy for her to lug back and forth. |
Wow, way to overreact.
