Giving every kindergartner an ipad

Anonymous
Is this countywide through FCPS or school decision?
Where comes the money? Is this a FCPS program or rich PTA investment?

FCPS program. All schools have this whether they’re in McLean or a Title 1 school. Kindergartners have use of an iPad. There’s one for every child. No child is “given” an iPad other than to use in school. They don’t go home. (There was talk of them going home in the event of a snow day, but that hasn’t happened this year.)

The money is likely from ESSER federal funding.

This K teacher hates them!!

There is tons of money in this. Someone really needs to follow the money.

It doesn't matter if it is ESSER funds or not. Is this the best use of funds?

I learned years and years ago, as a Title I teacher, that the "powers that be" don't always make the best decisions or pick the best uses of funds.

someone needs to start looking at all the different contracts.

This makes giving Ibraheem Kendi over $40K for an hour of zoom look like peanuts.

Why the F does a Ker need an iPad?! People have lost their damn minds!!!

Screen time has been linked to behavioral issues in a wide range of ages.

While not every kid is affected by excessive screen time, it is reasonable to think that there are kids that would have otherwise normal behavior are now suffering from the dopamine addiction seen from the standard reward based learning apps and the instant gratification of some of the other apps.

These kids are also being babysat in some cases by screens at home. This is compounding issues, IMO, in the classroom.

Kids don't get enough screen time at home so they can get it school now instead of playing with blocks or puzzles or other tactile things that have been proven for centuries to develop brains.

I was K teacher. I cannot imagine the problems this will cause. In the past, you had to ask the kids to quit chatting in order to listen. Now, "get off your Ipad."Not to mention--whose is whose? Names on them? Sorting that out will also be an issue. "He stole my Ipad!"

The housekeeping issues, too--do they take them home? Do they bring them back"

What do these people have for brains?

FCPS and their push for technology use are disgusting.

If I were a K teacher, they would be stored. There would only be occasional use.

Is anyone posting here an actual parent of a kindergartner? Geez. In my kid’s class they use the iPads at very specific times, for Lexia and one math program. It’s not every day and it’s not for very long in a given day. It has never come home and they charge at school using some type of charging station. I’m much more annoyed by the laptop my third grader has. It’s old and heavy and he has to lug it home to charge every day. They also seem to use it a LOT in that grade. It definitely feeds their screen and video game addictions. The kids spend a lot of time talking and thinking about how to access various games and websites on their school computers.

There’s a problem with tech use but it’s not in K.

I hate this so, so, very much. Our kinders don’t have iPads. They have full sized laptops and are expected to lug them to and from school every single day so they can charge them at home. If that is not the most ridiculous thing in the history of ridiculous things, I don’t know what is.

Almost no schools are sending ES laptops home nowadays. Is yours still doing that?

OP here. Not a current K-parent, but will be. Your comment made me worried even more.
