Elrich property tax increase

Anonymous
And the thing is- it's the only card Elrich knows how to play.

And when people make specious arguments like "well I want to pay for schools", hey, so do I. But that makes the false assertion as if we arent paying anything now.

Teachers are making more in Montgomery County than they are in every neighboring jurisdiction in the area, besides PG. The real bloat is in MCPS admin.

Some of the blame on this goes to Kirwin, which really put the squeeze on every county to comply. But Elrich has never negotiated hard with any public sector union, nor will he ever start.

We all get the governance we deserve for voting for this guy and the council (again).

Revenue is down (or- Elrich can't control spending). So what do we do? Raise taxes.

People with means vote with their feet to neighboring counties, and VA.

Revenue is down again- and schools are a little worse, and crime is up. So what do we do- raise taxes.

Rinse, repeat.

People with means would pay tens of thousands of dollars to avoid a property tax increase of a few hundred dollars per year? I mean, maybe, but it's not a rational response.

Except MoCo already has near the highest income taxes in the state. This is 10% increase in property tax in a single year. Keep increasing taxes at that rate and see how well thst turns out for the county 10 years from now. People will absolutely flee crushing income and property taxes. Look at Baltimore.

Because people haven't been slammed yet with tax increases. The high salary base will flee, because they get taxed the hardest. Have fun with a bunch of renters who work low salary service jobs while the county's number of retirees explodes. The county's revenue base is going to implode.

You should look at the county's demographics report.

Retirees are skyrocketing, high earners are expected to decrease, and the only thing bolstering the county's population are immigrants, of whom will be working low paying service industry jobs. The county's tax base is degrading. The fact that they have to increase taxes now is already proving the demographics report to be true. There is almost no economic and jobs growth, so where are revenues going to come from if your base of high earners are decreasing, retirees are increasing, and your only population growth comes from individuals with low salaries? You're going to increase taxes even more on high earners and home owners.

Have fun watching the county ruin themselves with Baltimore policies all over again.

Oh wait, and here I thought gentrification is bad. So at least flight could be a good thing, amirite?

Also, if you don't believe me, go look up how many Asians there are in Baltimore now vs 1950s. Where did Baltimore's Chinatown go?

You are sorely mistaken of flight implies race. Everyone who cares for their safety and their wallets left Baltimore. Recent data on Baltimore's population loss also shows it is Black.residents leaving the most, lol. Everyone wants to flee crappy local govts who only ever know how to raise taxes, ruin schools, and can't develop the economy out of wet paper bag.

For high earners with high value houses, the increase is substantial, especially when added every year. We got a tax assessment notice INCREASING the value of our property by $1 million dollars. The assessment is not accurate because the market has cooled down from last summer. When you add in the tax rate increase, we will be paying $12,000 MORE a year in property taxes. We will likely go from $19,000 a year in taxes to $31,000 a year. That equates to almost $2,600 in property taxes each month. I don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for us having a high value home but my point is that we are not talking about a few hundred dollars.

OK, so, for people with very high assessed property values, it would be more than a few hundred dollars a year. Would you sell and move if your property taxes went up like that?
