Elrich property tax increase

They could have voted for a moderate Republican, Reardon Sullivan

They could have voted for moderate Independent, Nancy Floreen last time.
Neither candidate cracked 25%

Actually we got what very few voted for. He won by a disgustingly small number of votes and most people voted for Blair or Reimer….who voted at all, anyway…..such a low torn out in the primary.

That's misleading since the majority voted for El Rich or he wouldn't have won. I regret voting for him. The fact that he just wants to increase taxes without addressing runaway MCPS spending shows he's a terrible leader.

someone doesn't understand majority vs plurality

Elrich was elected in November 2022 with 75% of the vote. That's a majority.

That is deliberately misleading. Everyone knows the real election is the dem primary. Which he squeaked out in a plurality.

If you want to claim he has some sort of mandate because he took 75% in the general election- I dont know what to tell you.

Everyone knows there is a primary election and a general election, and both of them are "real elections."

the general election is a formality.

A republican will never win in Moco so it's irrelevant. The democratic primary is the actual election which determines who will be the executive.

Moco is wildly democratic so, yes, the vast majority of people in Moco did not want elrich.

The vast majority of voters in Montgomery County voted for Elrich.

See above..."did not WANT" as evident by the primary.

Of course i reluctantly voted for him in the general, but I didn't want him.

You didn't vote for him by mistake, did you? At minimum, you wanted him more than the other guy, strongly enough to vote for him.

Sullivan is more nuts than Moderate, and since he had an "R" next to his name, he had no shot in the general.

Floreen got in late, with no money.

Just stop please.

10% increase in the property tax "to keep up with inflation"

What world does that guy live in?

"Revenues have been unable to keep up with inflation"

OK but assessment increases alone have dramatically increased the property tax amount for most people.

And since inflation is so high, why do we have to reach into our pocket that is already stretched?

Maybe dont hire Craig Rice to a no show job- there is 200k right there.

What a load.

He's also increasing the titling and recordation taxes a ton, for when you buy or sell a home. Double yuck.

Nothing to show for it, as usual. Just more benefits for the county lifers.

The recordation tax also applies when you refinance.

For the property tax, they’ve been telling us for years that housing prices have gone up faster than inflation, and that’s true. The only reason the school budget didn’t keep pace is that the county diverted money to things that should have been lower priorities.

The school budget *has* kept pace though. It goes up every year, and with maintenance of effort- it's literally mandated.

And even if you believe MCPS needs more funding (debatable with the bloat of central office, and other non teaching increases) how do you explain the entire rest of the budget going up by 8-11%?

I have started to vote Republican in state and local elections. Moderate Democrat here.

I started out straight D when I moved to MoCo in 2008. I'll never vote for a local or state D again. The County is failing, and anyone denying it isn't paying attention. MCPS gets worse every year, the police get worse, public services get worse, and taxes go up. Some anecdotes from past month: Trash has just stopped picking up yard waste most of the time. It's a crap shoot. Called 311 about noise from a condo construction site, and the woman told me to get lost. Called police non-emergency to tell them that someone was doing donuts in a Bethesda parking garage, guy hung up on me. As long as County government keeps getting rubber stamp politicians and budget increases from one party, they will spend more, tax more, and care less. It's just reality.

I'd like an alternative too, but unfortunately the republican party just runs nutcases. I looked into the Sullivan guy who was running, and it was just the same bunch of "CRT" and "defund the police" nonsense that you hear on Fox. I'd love a moderate republican, but they are few and far between.
