Wealthy POC: What has your career been like?

Sorry, no.

Black people with generational roots in this country have their set of struggles.

It’s not oppression Olympics though. Other POC have their own struggles that are equally valid and they should not be silenced or gaslit as ‘co-opting AA struggles”. This makes you no better than the racist that invalidates you.

Worked my butt off in the tech field on the biz side met my wife (2nd marriage for me) who was also Indian and got an MBA from a top school. Together we make over $800k..(almost equal each), NW ~$7M give or take and work hard/play hard. Career has been upwards with a lot of holding pattern. Work for an old tech company reporting to the EVP where all of them are white and I am the only minority. Most meetings I am the only brown person but I have always believed in letting my skills do the talking. On top of that I don't have a 'anglecized' name.

Could I have gone higher in my career if I was white...maybe or who knows. What a great country this is...both my wife and I came here with nothing but a few suitcases!

Hell yeah congrats!

And a free education in your home country!

India does not provide free education except at elementary level, stop being jealous.

Attribute success to having very high EQ and understanding what people around me want. For the other poster who mentioned making white people feel comfortable, I do that too. Often by way of shared experiences— white ppl vacation spots or sports/hobbies, etc.

Yes, have faced usually subtle micro aggressions but not generally overt racism.

I make over $400k annually (this does not include spouse’s income). I went into medicine and selected a high paying specialty. I am a black woman. I have found that the profession of medicine generally embraces diversity and values high work ethic and intelligence above social class. And it’s a good thing, because I grow up lower middle class, parents struggled with finances and lost the only home they ever own to foreclosure. I took out massive student loans to attend prestigious undergraduate and med school, which is why I was intentional about selecting a high paying specialty.

Indian here. I’m in tech sales which is white male dominated with black sprinkled in. Running into a fellow Indian in tech sales it like bumping into a unicorn. Only racist people I have bumped into is African Americans. Not even sure I would say racist, but definitely bigoted with a huge side helping of jealousy. I overcome by ignoring. Indian culture doesn’t accept or nurture victim excuses. I’ve always just let my work speak for itself. I wasn’t raised to naval gaze and feel sorry for myself. I think POC have done themselves no favors by constantly blaming their short comings on being a victim.

I also benefited from parents who had blue collar jobs (taxi driver and daycare provider) who always put my education first and who saved every single penny for me to get a good education. They immigrated to the US when I was in elementary school for educational opportunities. When you come from solid family values where excellence and hard work are not optional then everything comes together. I’m so proud I can now give my mom and dad the life they deserve for sacrificing so much for me.

Black woman and not necessarily wealthy but enough money that I am not worried about going broke. Perhaps racism has been an issue but I can't point to any specific incidents or actions that I would label as racist and frankly, the best bosses I have had who created more opportunities for me have been white men. My worst bosses have been Black women. Perhaps the earlier statement about making white people comfortable applies to me though I am not biracial like that poster. I also don't come from a background of struggle or poverty, which I think gave me a different outlook on life. My parents were married, educated and professional. My grandparents were blue collar, but married, and all were land/homeowners.

It is a pretty standard path and many UMC Black Americans are just like me.

They question you to your face and others? OMG, no words, awful

My takeaway from reading these posts is that the successful POCs do not think of themselves as victims, they grab at opportunities, and know how to navigate the dominate population enough to make white people comfortable around them.
