This was also over a decade ago so things may be different today. |
What likely happened is the home school was Blair and they joined Blair in 11th and were able to take magnet electives as are any Blair students in 11th grade that meet the prerequisites and get accepted to that class. That’s not the same as being in the magnet. |
Well, that's what I thought but my neighbor claimed it was full access to the program including the 12th grade research classes. |
It is possible that a regular Blair kid can take magnet classes and electives including participating in the senior research project. But usually magnet classes in 9th grade are for the magnet kids. |
Highly unlikely. MCPS admins can’t be ‘worn down’. Different now. |

They haven't met my wife. Kidding aside, all things are always negotiable, and a local school can do whatever they want even if they claim differently. |
Totally untrue. Local schools absolutely cannot overrule central office in magnet admissions. No you can’t just “wear down” the administrators. Your neighbor was misrepresenting his kids place. Probably for perceived status. |
Starting in 11th would mean they really missed most of the magnet prep and just took some electives (which are open to anyone with the prereqs anyways). |
Blair has a semirivalry with TJ, and they are hosting a math tournament next month for middle school students run by their math club, same as TJ. |
Blair is a HS, not MS. |
You lack reading comprehension. |
The Blair one has been around for ever. Did TJ just copy them? |
I think there is a TJ middle school somewhere. |
The Blair tournament page archive goes back to 2015. It's not clear which one was first, as TJ's tournament has been around since at least 2015. The Blair tournament is free and has more tests, and no limit on students. |
