Simple. Longfellow or Carson kid who doesn't mention math contests in their essay is viewed as an unprepped, natural talent. The Longfellow or Carson kid who qualifies for AIME is viewed as the product of privilege and heavy enrichment. We can gloss over the fact that the kid who doesn't mention math contests either did poorly or isn't that into STEM, and that even with all of the prep in the world, many 8th graders are incapable of qualifying for AIME. |

The act of practicing a sport and investing in coaching can be likened to practicing math. While a child who dedicates time to practicing a sport is likely to see improvements compared to someone who does not, it does not guarantee that everyone who trains will become a professional athlete.
