Suspect boundary fraud - Oakton High

You realize the households without children still contribute to FCPS without a tax break. You’re not entitled to anything.

I don't think it is OK to be defrauding your way into your school of choice. Either the choice is for all or none and the boundaries are what they are (whether you agree with them or not). And it's BS that people manipulate them.

That said, I wouldn't do anything for the fact that:
a) there are legit reasons the kid may be placed there that you are not aware of. I think this doesn't happen as much as it used to but it does still happen.
b) They probably have a legit "out" that would cover them. Even if it's fraud. I know a few families whose kids go to another school b/c they have condos or second properties that one of the parents now "lives at" and claims that residency.

I can’t get real excited about one out of boundary kid who still lives in FCPS attending Oakton when Madison has found ways to recruit athletes into that school for many years.

You could always report your concern to people who are in the position to look into it. Then it's up to them to determine how much of a priority it is... and you have a clear conscience.

If you email the school registrar, you could just say that you have reason to know that X is no longer living in the Oakton zone, and really lives in the .... zone.

It may be that they are allowed to stay at Oakton until the end of the year (are they 12th graders?). Or maybe they are allowed to stay for a specific program. Who knows! Buy, they may be cheating, and that's up to the school to figure out by requesting more info. You put it in their lap and let Oakton HS decide what to do about it.

They sold their houses/condos when the kid moved into 9th grade. The kid is now in 10th grade.

MYOB. The MD plates may simply be that primary custodial
Parent lives in boundary in VA, while the second lives in MD.

What is their address listed as in the school directory?

Who lists their home address in the HS directory? Anyone with common sense stops that past elementary school.

Either way, we know people with MD who drop off at our local VA schools. One is a divorced family and one parent lives in MD. The other sometimes drives a work vehicle with MD plates.

There could be any number of reasons unknown to you as to why they are still attending, despite having moved to another FCPS boundary. But before you try to rat them out, think for a minute, OP. How would you feel if you petitioned (and received authorization) to have your child remain at their old school for one of the allowable reasons, and your former neighbors contacted the school to “inform” them of this alleged discretion? It’s really none of their business as to why you petitioned and received permission — if it was, then these petitions would be made public. But I’m sure it would make you angry to be tattled on. The only way I would consider informing anybody is if I new FOR A FACT (as in, they admitted it) that they were committing fraud — and even then, I’m not sure I would do it. Live your life, OP!

I think you can apply for waivers every year. Jealous much?

I followed a Maryland plate from kiss and ride last month and guess where it ended? Silver Spring.

As a PP said, this could be a non-custodial parent or other relative dropping off.if you followed someone all the way home, that’s stalking.

You had time to do that?! Loser.

Our neighbors moved a few months ago and absolutely asked to pupil place their kids at the same school they had been attending vs switching schools. Principal allowed it. Your “gotcha” moment might not be as juicy as you think.

+1

First, i'm not sure I believe this, but I could think of lots of possibilities:

grandparents picking up kid
split custody
special event

who in their right mind would drive from Silver Spring to Oakton for school every day?
