Hey, People, OP is just venting and this is his or her first day back in the office! Have some sympathy. We've all been there after a vacation or similar. |
For real. People are being super harsh when 90% of my friends IRL feel this way about the office |
Up until the driving into work part, which part aren’t you doing to WFH? Are you one of the people who never turns their camera on or when you do you look like you just got off a 3-day bender? But also WFH is more productive and you behave the same and are professional. |
Let her vent. For those who might have always only WOH, having experienced the difference with WAH they have realized whether one or the other is better for them.
I've done both and I far prefer WAH. I'm much more committed to ensuring my time is actually work. I don't spend 15min chatting at the water cooler or attending that in-person retirement lunch in the conference room. From a personal perspective, the time saved by not commuting means more time to either work if I need to or be with my family. We've seen plenty of people realize WAH isn't for them and they were glad to get back to the office. Not everyone feels that way even if it was what they always did in the past. |
WFH and WOH are like two different jobs for me. I am about to take a 50% pay cut to start a fully remote position. |
OP I am 100% with you. Our office is even stupider- ALL meetings are virtual even if everyone is in the office- which never actually happens. Hybrid is incredibly stupid, unless there is some event that creates a reason to go to the office. If you are not client facing, if you are not going to court, why go into the office? It makes no sense. |
Many of us have been going back to work since 2021 and enduring wearing masks for a period of time and getting Covid checks at work. This is 2023. It’s time to get back to normalcy. Good luck, off, finding your next job. I hope they don’t give you a writing test. |
I’m sorry, OP, I really am. I’m saying this gently because I know it really, really sucks to have to return to the office, but you *need* to work on reframing the situation in your mind. You will have to adjust your bedtime. Try to do it gradually. Keep your bedtime the same on weekdays regardless of whether you’re staying home or going into the office. It’s cold and windy today, but overall, we’ve had a warm winter and it’s generally good to get outside for part of the day. Focus on solutions, not your feelings. How can you arrange to drink good coffee? How can you prep healthy breakfasts ahead of time? Bear in mind that the silver lining of a deadly worldwide pandemic was getting to work from home. That was the aberration. Returning to the office is the norm. Remind yourself that you were lucky to get to WFH for *years.* Find something you actually enjoy doing in 5 minute increments and do it while you wait for virtual meetings to start. If you keep stewing about how miserable it all is, you will only feel worse. |
Sorry you chose the wrong career. |
Why? There is absolutely zero reason why I need to be in-person for my job. I haven’t invested in commercial real estate, though. |
Pffff....where my wife works, all they do is waste time on elaborate lunches and meetings where all they do is snack multiple times per day. They constantly leave early to do team happy hours multiple times per month. During the spring through the fall, they seem to have company paid for food trucks almost every week where employees waste 1-2 hours on lunch BSing and burning through huge amounts of company money on free food. I'd be pissed about all of the time wasted during office culture and all of the money down the drain for amenities for the office for workers if I were an investor in the company where my wife works. So much wasted time at the office. |
It sounds like you hate your job.
If you're anything like the rest of DCUM you're probably VERY well-paid for these meetings and conference calls. If having to haul your computer and lunch to the office a few days a week is too taxing then find something else. |
![]() ![]() ![]() Were you not employed before 2020? Suck it up buttercup. It’s call real life. |
This is exactly how everyone in my office feels. They are actually changing the policy soon to decrease the days you come in but require more coordinated days so everyone is in the office at the same time. I'm fine with that. Nothing makes me angrier than teams meetings from my office. |
