Which HS magnets is your child turning down?

What's the rationale for maintaining these strictly merit-based systems for a select group of magnets when MCPS is moving all the others at other grade levels to a strict lottery system once kids qualify? Does equity not count for some schools?

The lottery should be removed from MS too. It completely dilutes magnet programs in the name of equity. I hope my kid completes HS in MCPS while merit still counts for something.

It's not like they are keeping TPMS a lottery while making Roberto Clemente a first-past-the-post test-in magnet. They are differentiating between a program one applies to at 10 and a program one applies to at 13, under the assumption that broadening the pool at 10 will get you more highly qualified kids at 13.

Because those select magnet hs programs are tough, very intense. Not doable if you are not a top student.

Nice. That was my kid last year. Loves the choice. Long days but they're managing their own time well. I just need to make sure I'm up and ready to get to the bus stop Did your kid also come from Clemente?

Kinda off-topic, but why do you need to be 'up and ready to get to the bus stop'? Do you have to drive your kid to a bus stop?

Yes... it's about a 40 minute ride on the bus, pick up is 6:30 about two miles away from us. I normally get up at 4AM, kid gets up a little after 5. I try to get us to leave a little early so we get a few extra minutes to just talk while we wait for the bus. Sorry if I made it sound like I dread it... I actually love the few minutes of extra time that I get with my kid.

No matter how many times people explain this, some seem to always get it wrong. The lottery was a pilot that began because of the pandemic. It ends this year. This has been public knowledge since it started. It is well documented.
