MCPS leadership gives pathetic response to bathroom safety concerns raised by parents

That’s why data are used. A one off bathroom break that takes longer than usual doesn’t set off alarms. You’d look for repeating patterns of taking too long etc.

You’d also look to see if one kid was constantly in bathrooms with another set of kids to the point that the number of times they’re both in the bathroom at the same time is an anomaly…..prob indicating a pattern of drug transactions.

In all seriousness, drug transactions occur all over school buildings because they are quick transactions done with a handshake or hug. Students buy and sell in hallways, stairwells, cafeterias, on property but outside, and classrooms as well as bathrooms. Use occurs all over school campuses as well but predominantly in bathrooms if vaping, smoking, or drinking.

Random inspection of bathrooms would help. Going to clear backpacks and utilizing police drug sniffing dogs would be a better deterrent. MCPS needs to do more to keep drugs out of schools even if they need to allow a greater police presence on campuses.

Loudon County Public Schools uses an e-hallpass system. Teachers know when students have left the classroom to use the bathroom and how long they've been out. It's reduced bathroom behavior issues significantly.

My solution is more SRO's, security guards and Para's monitoring, security cameras everywhere but the bathrooms and have staff monitor the bathrooms. Also, add metal detectors and bag searches as well as wearing student ID's.

And, have detentions and suspend/expel kids. Make it mandatory kids with drug related issues be required to do drug testing (county has programs) and treatment in order to stay in school. And, bring back special schools for kids with behavioral issues.

These are two good ideas but my only issue with dogs is some kids and staff may be allergic.

MCPS COO Brian Hull's great idea is to do hall sweeps in the bathrooms before class. How he's going to manage that with existing security personnel numbers, he doesn't say. And he admits they don't have enough female security officers to do sweeps of the girls bathrooms.

That really wouldn't help just siphon off resources from education. As someone else mentioned, both Parkland and Uvalde had SROs and that didn't really help either of them. They're not effective at reducing violence or ensuring safety.
