Will walking be just as effective?

That can't be good for your knees or hips.

Probably better is holding small hand weights. OP, walking is one of the most underrated exercises around. It’s so good for the full body & mind.

I actually think fast walking is a better workout than the bike or elliptical. But it isn’t enough for optimal health. You need to do some more intense cardio and strength training too. I’d save just walking for days when you just cannot manage to get to the gym- but not as your primary form of exercise

Walking at an incline raises my heart rate better than spinning. Incline is key.

Walking is better than nothing, but it's not "just as effective" as higher heart rate cardio. Can you jog for 20 minutes? Or at least do intervals switching run/walk every other minute?

wear a weighted vest. it'll help build muscle mass and increase bone density. increasing muscle mass is a great way to lose excess fatty weight.

Long strides are an invitation for injury. An overstriding leg is straighter and stiffer, which reduces your body's ability to absorb the force of your landing. This can lead to shin, knee, and hip injuries. Better to walk briskly with short strides.

To increase intensity, I suggest intervals. Walk around the block, do 15 squats, walk around the block, do 15 pushups (jumping jacks, etc).

I’ve never lost weight walking BUT I have improved my stamina and overall health. For weight loss & fitness you need something more intense.

I don't think those 20 mins will do anything. Best bet would be high intensity for those 20 mins to increase metabolism throughout the day.

Read a study that showed high intensity can cause post calorie burn equal to 37% of the calories burned.

I read that swinging your arms higher while walking is 33% more calories burned.

Do a 20 min HIIT workout. There are plenty online.

I burn more calories using walk at home workouts than walking in the neighborhood. YouTube has a lot. Search walk for weight loss. I usually do a two mile video that takes 25 to 30 minutes in the morning and a 10 minute walk outside during lunch.

What I CAN fit in is a brisk 20 minute walk around my neighborhood. My goal is weight loss, so I’m worried now because I was making progress.

What can I do to make this 20 minute walk as effective as possible?

If your main goal is weight loss then focus on diet.

Walking and exercise is great and important for health but diet is where you lose weight.
