My kid reposted the news today during lunch. He was very excited as were his friends. They are all thrilled it’s coming back.
He was verbalizing and visualizing the endless cheese, lettuce, beans, fruit, tortillas etc salads in his near future. |
| Do the kids help themselves to the salad bar cart? Is the salad bar purchase paid for by weight? (Picturing my 5yo piling a container full of the heaviest fruit and then having time to eat 1 grape.) |
When we last had ours (ES), the students helped themselves, but there was always a cafeteria staff person monitoring. It's the same price as a regular lunch. |
Thank you. I don’t think they are at our school yet and neither of my kids would likely stand in a line they thought only served “salad”, but….🤷🏻♀️ |
More of my students took the school lunch when we had the salad bar. On most days now I’d say no more than 3 students buy the “regular” school lunch. |
| I’m not certain, but I think the kids are encouraged to take veggies from the salad bar before they head to the hot foods. There is an attendant that helps with serving and keeping the line moving. |
I posted about three veggies earlier - this was my understanding of how it worked at our school. |
| I was a kid in FCPS in the 80’s. I fondly remember the salad bar, especially on Friday’s when it was taco salad day. Line was out the door. |
Yes, us too. It was just part of the hot lunch price. No added charge and the kids were encouraged to take a few things from the salad bar before getting the hot lunch. |
| My kid's is a vegetarian, the salad bar was the only think the school served that she was remotely interested in, and it was actually very popular with her friends. Hopefully it's back before she leaves for MS |
| It’s great your poopsies love it, but the reality is FCPS is large and serves many different kids. A lot of kids won’t touch it. |
That's fine, they don't have to. Nobody is forcing kids to use it. But for those who did like it, it's really nice to have it coming back! My DC loved it and has really missed it. |

I am so happy about this.
My kids are used to having fresh fruit and veggies and don’t like the hot veggies that are served. So hooray! |
Do you wake up this unpleasant or does it build during the day? |
By “a lot of kids” that are “different,” I’m inferring that you mean poor kids who aren’t white. I work in a Title 1 school that had a salad bar before COVID and is getting one soon. Kids do love it. Everyone took something. Our principal announced we were getting it, and kids are excited. There is both fruit and veggies on it as well as some protein choices. The bar is positioned so that you have to pick up your tray at the bar and go by it in order to get to the kitchen where the entrees are. |
