Is having a child selfish?

Agree.

Live simply, so others can simply live!

This means; do not have children.

If you must, adopt.

+1. Most selfish thing I've ever done. In order to raise them well I've had to turn considerably away from my pre-kid efforts that had much wider impact. Maybe that will change when they're older? But yes, I think having kids is inherently giving into the selfish ego.

1 or 2, no. Just replacing yourself and partner in continuing our species.

Totally selfish to bear a child. There are far too many children already in this world who need a home.

Yes. If your child suffers in life, it's because you chose to bring them into the world. I struggle with anxiety and depression and wish I had never been born so I didn't have to suffer. Of course, no one thinks their child is going to be the one born with health problems, but unfortunately some will be, and you don't know whether your child will be the unlucky one.

Every person who we list as someone who has done something for the betterment of humanity was a child once. Raise your child so they can use the gifts they have been given not only for themselves.

Yes, it’s selfish in that the reason to have children is because you personally want that. Any other reason (perpetuation of the species, desire to propagate your religion, social/spousal pressure, poorly design economies, etc) is either negated by the already over large population and climate change or the compounding selfishness of having and raising unwanted children. I have children, consider it selfish, and don’t feel terribly bad about myself. One can’t live a wholly selfless existence.

Is driving a car selfish?
Living in a big house in the low density suburbs?
Using the AC in the summer?
Taking 20 minute showers?

Enough already.

+100. I decided not to have children and was told I was selfish for only thinking of my self. It's a no-win with other people. Do what you want.

No.

The UN says we are facing an over-population catastrophe.

The UN says world population will keep increasing at least until 2100.

It will be a catastrophe. And our doom!

Why am I responsible for other people overpopulating the world? As long as I have 1 or 2 children, I am not contributing to the problem.

Your argument reads like - I am selfish for using a car because there are factories spewing thousands of liters of greenhouse gases into the air
