Actually, the government is following the will of the people. Those people wanted fewer police and softer penalties for violent criminals. Remember, we'd rather have many, many, many black lives die in gun violence than have a tiny, tiny, tiny number of black people die from unprovoked police brutality . . . . because only black lives that die from unprovoked police brutality matter.

No the government has been going against the will of the people. People want the guns off the street but republicans make sure that will never happen. This is years of republican policies that are soft on criminals and remove all accountability for police to actually do their job.

Please name the Republicans who have prevented getting guns off the street in DC? DC mayor and city council has been controlled by Democrats since 1975.

Nailed it.

How about taking guns away from anyone with a criminal record?

How do you propose they do that?
It has been illegal for felons to own guns for many years.
They cant just get a list of felons and start searching all their homes.

People can either spend time laying blame or spend time proposing solutions.

I see very little leadership from elected officials to address solutions.

They already do that to felons.

Solutions:
1. More police (not a few more, maybe double or triple the current number; raise pay if needed to attract more police)
2. Harsher sentences for criminals and an end to plea bargains that let too many criminals avoid serious jail time
3. More pretextual police stops to get guns off the streets (these actually do work)

It's not rocket science. Unfortunately, though, politics will ensure that none of this ever happens.

I think the first one should be pretty non-controversial. They should pull a page from the past and build little sheds on every corner in areas where there is high violent crime and stick in cop in there 24/7. They need to have more patrols in high crime areas with more visibility. They also need to get more serious about nuisance crimes.

This is not about guns honey, if you think you can remove every gun from every criminal or person who wants to do something like this, you are insane. Look at all the school shootings in gun free zones. This is so much bigger than guns, it's a societal, cultural problem that is becoming the norm. Less policing and presence has had an obvious negative impact on the quality of life in this city.

Honey, other countries have done it.

PP here. Fine with me. I don't have a gun and don't have a criminal history. I'm fine with DUI and gun checks.

I'm a moderate Dem in DC and I'm done with the liberty shown to these teens with violent felony histories. I am all for restorative justice and I think the way we run our prisons only creates more hardened criminals, but there has to be a middle ground between throwing a 17 year old murderer in with adults and letting them off without even a record.

Heartbreaking and sadly predictable. The council members are all complicit. I had an email exchange with Charles Allen months ago to plead with him to change his tune. He claimed he was tough on crime and wasnt doing anything to soften the law. I felt completely disgusted and gaslit. Im not sure anything would change his thinking.

My son goes to college in Canada. Parents do not allow their kids to visit the US. Too dangerous. Makes me sad.
