1. Honors college I think everyone who writes the essay gets in
2. Merit aid: Most people got the 4k merit aid but I wonder if there will be more later

So, you don't think there is a GPA requirement or SAT benchmark for either Honors or for merit aid?

DP. Of course there is. "Most people" don't get merit aid.

There seems to be a huge range of honors college admits. My daughter had a 4.3, 32 ACT and got in (not surprising); my son had a 3.9 (W), 27 ACT and also got in.

(Neither of them ended up attending, FWIW.)

Congrats to those who got in!

It's a good school that unfortunately gets overlooked by many solely because it's too close to home.

PP, can you tell me some pluses or special things about GMU? I have heard it is a good school but DC seems to discount all that, probably bec it is closely. Would love to get them to take another look!

Exactly. I’m sure other kids (from elsewhere) rule out universities that they live close to as well. Kids from all over come to GMU, so it’s really just locals who pooh-pooh it due to proximity.

When we toured with our oldest we thought it was a good option nothing too special. Then we toured 3 years later with our youngest and honestly, it was the best info session we went to and we were much more impressed. He emphasized that the location is such a benefit bc there are so many opportunities to do internships while taking classes —you can go to DC 2 or 3 days a week for an internship and take classes the other days. They have so many partnerships with great companies and really impressed us. Don’t know if our kid will choose it but it definitely moved up his list.

+1
GMU is probably the best VA school for internships. So many opportunities.

Um, yah. Not talking about just one field - GMU has access to internships across ALL fields.

+1 DS, in Arlington, would not consider GMU even though it had a great program for his interest. My friend's kid in Richmond was accepted this week and it's her first choice. She wouldn't apply to VCU. I was the same back when I was applying to colleges -- would not consider UCLA because it was too close to home and I'd visited the campus so many times for school field trips.
